Arnold Hoffmann, 80, Was Anti-Nazi Painter NEW YORK—Arnold Hoffmann, an artist, famous for his anti-Nazi paintings, died Sunday at age 80. In his youth Mr. Hoffmann gained praise for his paintings of flowers, landscapes and portraits. But as Mr. Hoffmann said, "An artist must reflect the era he is in," and by 1938 his subjects had changed to concentration camps, bombings, and trenches filled with corpses. Although he loved flowers, throughout the conflict he refused to paint them, saying he was ashamed to. His famous war poster "Free World—or Slave World," was bought and distributed by the Office of War Information. Other of his works are in the University of Palestine, Free- dom House and in many private collections and institutes. In 1956 Mr. Hoffmann was elected to the International Insti- tute of Letters and in 1957 to the Royal Society of Arts in London. He was also a member of' the American Water Color Society, the Audubon Association and the Allied Artists of America. PHILADELPHIA — A former Painter.
