JEWISH IDENTITY: Jewish identity is a subject much talked of nowadays in this country . . . A visit to the Brandeis Institute, at Brandeis, Calif., gives direction to finding an answer to this question . . . This is what some outstanding New York Jewish leaders and educators have discovered after having spent a four-day weekend at the Brandeis Camp Institute . • . They included such personalities as Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee; David G. Salten, executive director of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York; Graenum Berger, educational consultant of the New York Federation; Abraham Goodman, known for his deep interest in Jewish education, and others . . . During the four days they spent at the Brandeis Institute, they were living with young men and women from 32 colleges in 17 states . . . They studied the "Brandeis approach" in strengthening Jewishness through a method developed by DT. Shlomo Bardin, executive director of the Brandeis Institute .. . Through this method that Dr. Bardin has succeeded in the last 25 years to implant a strong feeling of Jewish identity among 6,000 college students, about 10,000 younger children, and 5,000 adults . . . He has found the way to make Judaism meaningful and relevant to college boys and girls, to married couples and 'then to children. * ENTHUSIASTIC REFLECTIONS: Dr. Slawson returned from Brandeis Institute to New York completely enchanted with Dr. Bardin's method, which he considers extraordinary . . . "One walks out of the weekend experience from the . Brandeis Institute with pride in one's Jewish identity," Dr. Slawson told me enthusiastically . . . He believes that the unique method developed by Dr. Bardin has given a partial answer to the query as to the _"how" and as to the "what" of Jewish identity, going beyond the stage of the "why" of this identity ... In the opinion of Dr. Slawson, Dr. Bardin's method should be studied carefully and employed wherever possible . . . He recommends that a scientific study be made of the procedure involved, weighing the relative effect of the influence of personality and the quality of the process on the resulting experience . . . A team consisting of a -sociologist, psychologist, and educator would be the appropriate grOup, he suggests . . • . An analysis, in depth, should be conducted, with emphasis on determining the degree to which the process itself is transmittable . . . "Should this transmit- tability be ascertained, then Dr. Bardin has evolved a valuaole tool for Jewish continuity," Dr. Slawson asserts . . . Similar is • the view of David Salten . .. He felt that the Brandeis Institute would give him and Mr. Berger some ideas which could be used in planning the educational programs of the camps and centers supported by the New York Federation . . . "What I saw, however, exceeded my most optimistic expectations," he stated later in New York . .. The success of the Brandeis Camp program, he says, actually indicates that a group of persons whose tie to Judaism is non-existent or greatly attenuated can, within a short period of time, be inspired and informed so that they view Judaism as an approach to life rather than as a collection of anachronistic and dysfunctional beliefs and practices . . . He finds Dr. Bardin's approach philosophical, humane, aesthetic and essentially religious rather than dogmatic and smug . . . And he advocates nationwide aid to Dr. Bardin for the creation of a preparatory school for gifted youth. Rep. Farbstein Urges U.S. Cease Training Arab "Warmongers" WASHINGTON (JTA) — A de- mand was made in the House of Representatives that the United States cease training military offi- cers of Syria and other Arab states in American military camps. Rep. Leonard Farbstein, New York Democrat, told the House that most Congressmen Were un- aware of such training until it was recently revealed by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara in test- imony before the House Armed Services Committee. In addition to Syrian military personnel, officers of Lebanon, Iraq, Jorda n and Saudi Arabia are also receiving free American train- ing, he said. Rep. Farbstein stressed that these countries had "vowed to make war against Israel, and that we are training men whom McNamara termed their "best of- ficers' to wage that war. Rep. Farbstein also said he re- garded this practice as "incon- sistent with our stated policies, contrary to our national interest and dangerous." He declared he was aware of an administration argument that the Soviet Union would train Arab officers if the United States failed to do so. He pointed out that the Arabs have been blackmailing the United States with this tactic for years. "I think we have gone too far in welcoming their officers to our training camps," he said. "It is one thing to sell arms on a busi- ness basis, another to train these men as our allies." He insisted that "these Arab officers be sent home" and that the United States deny hospitality to "warmongers." NEW YORK — Two scientists supporting the move of Morton Sobell for a new trial swore Mon- day that key scientific - evidence used to convict him was worth- less. Dr. Philip Morrison, professor of physics at the Massachusetts In- stitute of Technology, and Dr. Henry Linschitz, pro f e s s o r of physical chemistry at Brandeis University, participated in the production and assembling of the atomic bomb that was exploded over Nagasaki. An alleged drawing of the cross-section of the bomb was said to have been turned over to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg by David Greenglass in 1945. They, in turn, allegedly gave the draw- ing and descriptive data to the Soviet Union. The Rosenbergs were executed in 1953, and So- bell, who was implicated, was convicted of espionage conspir- acy and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He is now in his 17th year of that term. At the time of the Rosenbergs' conviction, Federal Judge Irving R. Kaufman said they had put "into the hands of the Russians the A-bomb years before our best scientists predicted Russia would perfect the bomb." Dr. Linschitz said the Green- glass sketch and supporting data allegedly passed to the Rosenbergs was "too incomplete, ambiguous and even incorrect to be of any service or value to the Russians in shortening the time required to develop their nuclear bombs."
