Israel's Cabinet
Members Asked
to Reduce Trips

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol took his
campaign for austerity as part of
Israel's new economic policy into
the highest echelons of his gov-
ernment. He requested that the
Knesset and his own cabinet min-
isters join the economy drive.
The premier asked Speaker of
the Knesset Kadish Luz to reduce
the number of members to be sent
as Israel's delegates to an inter-
parliamentary conference to be
held at Teheran next month. He
also asked every Minister to re-
duce trips abroad by members of
their departments, or even by
themselves, unless such travel is
absolutely necessary.
The Knesset took a number of
11th hour actions prior to adjourn-
ing for the rest of the summer.
When the house reconvenes, it
will meet in its new, handsome
parliament building, on a hill over-
looking the Judean valleys.

1,000 Employes Fired
From Israeli Firms

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel's
Treasury announced here Aug. 11
that, as part of the government's
drive for economy, more than
1,000 employes in 12 large, govern-
ment-owned companies have been
dismissed from their jobs in the
last 15 months.
The number of dismissals, said
the Treasury Department's spokes-
man, affected 5 per cent of the
labor force in those firms owned
by the government. In spite of
these dismissals, the spokesman
added, production by the firms has
increased during the period cov-
ered by the report.
A series of meetings was un-
der way in the continuing efforts
to hammer out a new economic
policy for Israel. There were still
serious differences between the
alignment partners—Mapai and
Ahdut Avodah — as well as be-
tween the entire alignment on
the one side, and its coalition
partners in the Cabinet on the
other. One of the major unre-
solved conflicts is between the
alignment and Mapam.
The secretariat of M a p a m,
which has been offered some con-
cessions in the efforts by Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol to win Ma-
pam backing for the economic
policy, met but failed to reach a
decision. A number of Mapam
leaders are opposed to the portions
of the economic plan outlined by
Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir.
Inside. Mapai itself, there are
serious rifts. A meeting of Mapai's
ideological circle disclosed that
economists on the Hebrew Univer-
sity faculty opposed the Sapir pro-
gram as one that, they said, fails
to meet Israel's needs.

one of the reasons for many of

he said was "imported from Is-

He was also reported as
at the rally that "It is a lie th
Nazis killed 6,000,000 Jews." He
also told the rally hypothetically
that "H only by some miracle all
the Bolsheviks, or all the Illumi-
nati, or all Jews were vaporized
tomorrow, we should have nothing
more to worry about. The trouble
with that beatific vision, of course,
is that.every educated man knows
it just can't be so." •
The New York Times reported
Tuesday that Prof. Oliver declined
to discuss his differences with the
Birch Society and denied that anti-
Semitism had been an issue in his
resignation. .
Later, it was announced that a
second Birch Society official had
resigned. He predicted more resig-
nations would follow.
Dr. Slobadan Draskovich of Chi-
cago said many society members
have become disenchanted with
Welch, who has "become a dic-
tator, going off on tangents, mak-
ing irresponsible statements." Dras-
kovich . stressed he is still a right-
wing conservative.
