Abraham Avidar, newly appointed Consul General of Israel for the Midwest, will make his inaugural appearance in De- troit at a leadership reception din- ner 7 p.m., Aug. 22, at the Stand- ard Club. diplomatic Mission in Russia and Poland. On his return to Israel he served in the U. S. Division of the Israel Ministry for Foreign Af- fairs. In 1963 Mr. Avidar was named Consul of Israel for Educational Affairs in the United States and in 1964 he became Senior Consul of Israel in charge of political af- fairs. Mr. Avidar and his wife have three children. Avidar Soble The Leadership Reception is be- ing hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shifman. The affair is in advance of the Cong. Bnai David testimo- nial dinner honoring Harold Soble. Completion of the new Bnai David sanctuary will coincide with the dinner honoring Soble, who is chairman of the building commit- tee. Soble has been a leader at Bnai David for many years, including serving as president. Born in So- kolko, White Russia, the son of a rabbi, he came to Chicago in 1921 and got his high school di- ploma through examinations at the University of Illinois. In 1924 he enrolled in the Detroit College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1926. In 192'7 Soble purchased the Checker Pharmacy at Fenkell and Braille and has operated it ever since. Consul-General Avidar was born in Poland and spent his youth in Danzig where he joined the Halut- zic-Pioneering Movements. As head of the group he organized the rescue of Jewish youths from Nazi Danzig. During World War II, he was in Great Britain where he acted on behalf of the Haganah in organizing an aliyah of Jewish youths from Britain. He studied at the London School of Economics. In 1947 he came to Palestine, joined Kibbutz Gated and fought in the Israel War of Independence. From 1958 to 1961 he was on a Jewish Chaplain Receives Air Medal in Viet Nam SAIGON, Vietnam — By direc- tion of President Johnson, Chap- lain (Major) Harry Z. Schreiner, one of the three Jewish chaplains in Vietnam, has been awarded the Air Medal for his "meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight in providing a chaplaincy program in support of combat ground forces in Viet- nam" from October 20, 1965, to July 12, 1966.
