THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 16—August 5, 1966 AJ Congress Dialogue Pursues Understanding of Diaspora Jewry REHOVOT, (JTA) — Israelis were warned here not to condemn Diaspora Jews since such condem- nation is, in reality, "condemna- tion of Jewishness." Addressing a session of the Am- erican Jewish Congress Dialogue here, Col. Mordechai Ban-On, chief education officer of the Israel Army, said that Jews who do not migrate to Israel are not inferior to Israelis. He called on all Israelis to con- centrate on developing more "Jew- ishness' in their lives as the best way to attract immigration from western countries. Other speakers at the session included Dr. Moshe Ben Meir, Deputy Interior Minis- ter, and Dr. Irving Greenberg, pro- fessor of history at Yeshiva Uni- versity. At an earlier session, Rabbi Aruthur Lelyveld, of Cleveland, president of the American Jew- ish Congress, warned that the pressures of nation-building in Is- rael, and the trend toward assimi- lation in the United States are causing Jews in both countries to abandon those cultural and ethical values that made the Jews a distinctive people. Rabbi Leyveld weighed the re- lationship of both Israeli and Am- erican Jews to Jewish traditional values in opening the "dialogue," which is being held at the Weiz- man Institute of Science here. About 40 Israeli and American scholars, writers and religious writers are attending the three- day parley which is devoted to the theme, "The Nature of the Jewish Distinctivness in the United States and Israel." "Both the Sabra and the Canaa- nite Jews in Israel and the assimi- lated Jew in the United States," said Rabbi Lelyveld, "reject the distinguishing values born of the Jewish religious heritage and folk experience.
