Anti-Semite Poet Ezra Pound Given
Notables' Accolades on 80th Birthday

For more than a decade, from
the time that he was indicted, in
1943, for treason—two years be-
fore he was brought to this coun-
try to be tried on that charge_
there were debates, feature ar-
ticles, discussions, on the topic of
the obsession of Ezra Pound. Many
an article was titled "Is Ezra
Pound Insance?"
He was declared insane after be-
brought here

for trial from
Italy and the
c h a r g e against
him was dropped.
He returned to
Italy, and they
affirm his insist-
ence that he was
never insane.
And in 1948 he
even won the
Bollimgen Prize
for Poetry.
In spite of his
)4broadcasts from
Italy against his
< native land, the
::United St ate s,
'regardless of his
venomous attacks
Pound
on the Jews, he still is hailed the
great poet.
That's how one must size up
"'Ezra Perspectives," a volume of
tributes to him, published by Hen-
ry Regnery Co. (114 W. Illinois,
Chicago). The volume was edited
by Noel Stock. Included are num-
erous essays, including articles by
same of the world's most em;nent
figures, in tribute to Pound on his
80th birthday.
Some of the essays were written
before the charge of treason was
conferred upon the world-famed
author who may have escaped the
gallows because of the insanity
ruling.
There is, for instance, the piece
that was written in 1932 by Ernest
Hemingway, who wrote: "The best
of Pound's writing—and it is in
the Cantos—will last as long as
there is any literature."
There is an essay in the "Ezra
Pound Perspectives" by Christine
Brooke-Rose in which she touches
upon the anti-Jewish attitude of
Pound. In a footnote to her corn-

Otherwise there are no refer-
ences to Pound's anti-Semitism,
although from the point of view
of poetic criticism and the judg-
ments on Pound's life the essays
are mainly objective. -
But the new book does revive
the interest in Pound's anti-Amer-
ican activities during the war, his
anti-Semitism, his likes and dis-
likes.
He had dealings with many,
sought a correspondentship through
Walter Lippman, met with rebuffs
in his time as well as acclaim.
Now his bigotry seems to be for-
gotten! "Ezra Pound Perspectives"
is mostly filled with accolades.
