Titanic Tragedy, Californian Captain's Role Told in Book THE

Peter Padfield began his nauti-
cal career when he was 16 as a
cadet on the British training ship
Worcester. He was a sea-farer at
18, became Second Mate on May-
flower II in its duplication of the
Pilgrims' voyage from England to
Plymouth, Mass.
He is therefore an authority on
maritime af'airs and his "The
Titatic and the Californian" pro-
vides dependable material about
the Titanic disaster and the inves-
tigations about the Californian
calamity.
There are shocking revelations
in this volume, published by John
Day Co. (62 W. 45th, NY 36), about
:the tragedy of the Titanic that had
:3been called "unsinkable." Captain
Stanley Lord of the Californian
had been blamed for failure to act.
It was charged that if he had acted
on time 1,500 lives of Titanic pas-
sengers would have been saved.
The charge made in, this book is
that the British Board of Trade
sought to cover up its own inade-
quacies and made a scapegoat of
Captain Lord.
Captain Lord's son, Stanley Tut-
ton Lord, in a foreword to the
book, offers added defense of his
father, condemning the misconcep-
tions about his guilt.

Padfield's is a remarkable study
offering. an excellent account of
the Titanic-Californian issue. His
full-length book carrying the com-
plete story of the debate over the
guilt, the actual happenings, the
court case, etc., is supplemented
by valuable data, together with the

affidavit that was signed by Cap-
tain Lord. The original statement
of Second Officer H. Stone of the
Californian also is offered as evi-
dence, in addition to the state-
ment of Apprentice Gibson and
relevant letters and other docu-
ments.

Never underestimate the power
of a Jewish housewife, especially
if her name is Mrs. Saperstein.
Mrs. Saperstein is the wife of the
late Abe Saperstein, the owner of
basketball's Harlem Globetrotters
who died some months ago. Now
she is leading her huband's team
on its annual tour of Europe.
Mrs. Saperstein who describes
herself as "a typical old-fashioned
Jewish wife" is taking over the
reins of the organization that her
husband built into a world-wide
attraction. She is a woman in her
50s who has been a housewife and
mother for 30 years.
She said that any ability she has
to handle the team came from
listening to her husband talk.
"Sometimes I surprise myself,"
she said, "when people ask, I give
an answer, but it is really Abe
talking. I am just getting over
