Her astonished and pleased He- brew teacher phoned Mrs. Goot- nick and announced her Luba was another Sarah Bernhardt. She may be right yet ! Luba Gootnick, now Luba Lisa, opened Tuesday night at the Act IV. Among her enthusiastic audience were Ethel Merman, Dame Judith Anderson, Eileen Rodgers and Bert Lahr. After graduating from the Yes- hiva, on the advice of her teach- ers Miss Lisa attended the High School of the Performing Arts and later wan a scholarship to the American Theatridal Wing in New York. Since that time she has appeared in "I Had A Ball" with Buddy Hackett, "I Can Get It Far You Wholesale" with Barbra Strei- sand, "Carnival," "West Side Story" and numerous other shows. Miss Lisa is a regular on the Johny Carson program and has done much local television work in New York. At the conclusion of her Act Iv engagement she will star with Liza Minelli in a touring company of "Pajama Game." Despite all the hustle and bustle of her rapidly rising career Miss Lisa has not forgotten her lessons at the Yeshiva nor her Orthodox upbringing. She considers herself "a very religious person" and attends synagogue as often as often as possible while on the road. "I love my business and I love my religion as well" was the way Luba Lisa put it. Y., out- raged by the second • vandalism against the Hebrew Congregation in that town, have organized a brotherhood meeting for July 29 at which plans will be considered to create a Somers human rela- tions committee for the area: The synagogue was smeared with swastikas, obscene epithets, and the words "Hitler Forever" and "Nazi Youth of America." Six months ago, vandals broke sev- eral windows in the synagogue. The Daily News of Mamaroneck said that the July 29 meeting "typifies the true neighborhood warmth and understanding that prevails more generally in West- chester County than cynics or ex- tremists realize." The newspaper added that it was "regrettable that it sometimes takes a mean, overt act of intoler- ance to bring such sensibilities to the surface and to stimulate active pursuit of peace and fellowship" but that, nevertheless, "the imme- diate response of the community" was a clear rebuff to the "destruc- tive purpose" of the vandals.
