Young Israeli Conquers Asthma, Sets
Record in European Swim Competition

A 22-year-old shepherd from
Kibbutz Ramat Yochanan, Israel,
has captured the European cham-
pionship for the 100-meter butter-
fly stroke, his uncle told The Jew_
ish News this week.
Avraham Melamed, called "Be-G-
ush" by his uncle Jack Malamud of
Southfield, won the , gold medal
for setting a new record of 1 min-
ute, 8/10 seconds June 30 at Bel-
grade, Yugoslavia. His achieve-
ment was hailed in the Israeli
press, all the more because he suf-
fers from asthma.
Beinush thereby beat by one-
tenth of a second his own record
of 1:00.9, set only days earlier at
Falsburg, Austria. In Rome,
prior to that, he placed .first in
the 100-meter race with 1:10.1.
The same European competition
saw him win the silver "Medal of
the Seven Hills" as the runner-
up in the 200-meter butterfly
,stroke.
Thus, in a span of 12 days, the
young Israeli won three gold
medals and a silver medal in Euro-
pean competitions.
Beinush, who visited Detroit two
years ago on his way to Tokyo for
the Olympics, in which he repre-
sented Israel, is scheduled to rep-
resent his country again in Decem-
ber at an international swim com-
petition in Bangkok, Thailand.
The son of the Ephraim Mela-
meds, kibbutz members since 1930,

Beinush is a graduate of Gush
Zvulin High School. He is one of
six children—"all good swimmers,"
according to his uncle.

Cantor DAVID BAGLEY, for-
merly with Cong. Beth Aaron and
now chief cantor of Mexico City,
will take part in the fifth Festi-
val of Jewish Music, in which
Richard Tucker will star Aug. 18
in Mexico City. Detroit tenor MOR-
RIE WEINER also will take part,
in the concert and will be lead
tenor of a 20-man chorus on the
High Holy Days.
