American Medical Center at Denver
Merges With Ex-Patient Sanitorium
• DENVER—The American Medi-
cal Center at Denver and the Ex-
Patient Sanitarium have merged
into one organization under the
American Medical Center name,
AMC board president, David W.
Garlett, announced.
The American Medical Center,
which was founded in 1904 as the
Jewish Consumptives' Relief Soci-
ety, is a free, national, non-sectar-
ian hospital that specializes in
unlimited treatment of advanced
and recurrent cancer and chronic
respiratory diseases and cancer re-
search. The Ex-Patients Sanitorium
was founded in 1908 and until re-
cently provided free medical care
and rehabilitation for patients dis-
charged from Denver sanitoria but
still unable to lead normal lives.
Under the terms of the merger,
the American Medical Center as-
sumes all assets and liabilities of
the Ex-Patients Sanitorium includ-
ing 81/2 acres - of land at 8000 Mont-
view Boulevard where the hospital
is located. In addition, eight mem-
bers of the Ex-Patients board have
been elected to the board of the
AMC.
AMC Board President David W.
Garlett described the merger as
"unprecedented". "This is the first
time that two national, charitable
institutions have merge d," he
said. "In a day of ever-rising costs,
this merger represents a return to
a more normal fiscal policy since
it enables us to increase our serv-
ices to the needy ill at the same
time that we cut costs of operation
by more than half."
Garlett explained that the AMC
will not operate the Ex-Patients
Sanitorium, although the AMC will
take over its program of care and
rehabilitation of patients.

TEL AVIV — One thousand den-
tists from 37 countries are attend-
ing the 54th annual convention of
the International Dental Federa-
tion.
Israeli Health Minister Israel
Barzilai said bad teeth were the
main reason for rejections of re-
cruits for army service. Tourism
Minister Moshe Kol urged the den-
tists to use their visit to see Is-
rael, to learn its past and present
and "visualize its future."
Meanwhile, government sources
confirmed that 30 international
conventions have been _scheduled
in Israel next year and that most
convention planners have made
detailed arrangements for the
conclaves.
The sources said that Israel was
increasingly providing appropri-
ate facilities at low cost for such
conclaves.

Schocken Books will publish
Sept. 9. a new edition of "Two
Tales" by S. Y. Agnon, the great
Hebrew writer, in a translation by

Agnon's blending of humor,
gentle irony and pathos, his min-
gling of the poetry of the Bible
and the familiar music of Jewish
speech are in evidence in these
two novellas.
Three of Shmuel Yosef Agnon's
books have been translated into
English, and "Two Tales" will be
followed soon by the English trans-

Britain Critical
of Arab Refugees'
Misuse of Funds
LONDON (JTA) — The British
government stated officially in the
House of Commons July 6 that the
monies it contributes annually for
the relief of Arab refugees "are
not intended to support political
or military activities" by the refu-
gees, "whether directly or indir-
ectly."
The statement was made in Par-
liament by Mrs. Irene White, min-
ister of state for foreign affairs, in
answer to a quetion by Leo Abse,
a member of the Labor Party, who
requested clarification of the Gov-
ernment's stand regarding contri-
butions - to the United Nations Re-
lief and Works Agency for Pales-
tine Refugees.
He requested specifically that
the government report on how
much of its UNRWA contributions
went to Arab refugees "being
trained in the Palestine Liberation
Organization, which is pledged to
the annihilation of Israel."

In her reply, Mrs. White dis-
sociated the British government
from backing any military par-
ticipation by the Arab refugees.
However, she said, there was no
way to know how much of Brit-
ain's UNRWA help went to such
people. She also said that Brit-
ish money is "intended only to
provide for relief of refugees."
She added that Britain has re-
peatedly •expressed its concern for
UNRWA's failure to rectify its re-
lief rolls. Such continued failure,
she warned, "can only lessen con-
fidence in the agency's ability to
carry out its task -effectively." She
reported that, in the calendar year
1965, Britain had contributed near-
ly $5,800,000 to UNRWA.
