Retired Pharmacist

Benjamin I. Dvorman, retired
pharmacist, died July 8 at age 75.
Mr. Dvorman, 19519 Cranbrook,
was a charter member of Temple
Israel.
Born in Lithuania, he came to
the • United States at age 15 some
60 years ago, and he lived in De-
troit 44 years. He retired in 1956.
Mr. Dvorman leaves his wife,
Ray; two daughters, Mrs. Aram
(Betty) Zakarian of Arlington,
Va., and Naomi of New York; a
brother, David Dworman; two sis-
ters, Sarah Dworman and Mrs.
Meyer (Hannah) Zacks; and three
`:,- andchildren by a deceased son,
el.

Ida Brenner, Age 75

Ida Brenner, former owner of
the I&M Stores, a retail clothing
establishment, died July 8 at
age 75.
Mrs. Brenner, 20130 Votrobeck,
was born in Russia and lived in
Deroit since 1928.
She leaves two sons, Samuel
Zafron and Morris Safron; a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Ben (Frances) Solomon;
a sister, Mrs. Jennie Berman; five
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.

Bernard Rubin, 43 Samuel Cohn, 94;
Bernard R u b i n, merchandiser `Light' Inventor
and buyer for Davidson Brothers

department stores (Federals), died
Tuesday at age 43.
Mr. Rubin, 22172 Twyckingham
Way, Southfield, was a member of
Town and Country Club and a
World War II air force veteran.
Born in Los Angeles, he lived in
the Detroit area 36 years.
He is survived by his wife, Char-
lotte; his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Rubin; a son, Gerald; two
daughters, Shelley and Lisa; and
a sister, Mrs. Hyman (Gloria)
Freedland.

NEW YORK - Samuel Cohn,
whose accidental discovery led to
a pre-Edison "light-bulb" that lit
many a city, died here at age 94.
At the time of his death, Mr.
Cohn held 200 patents for various
inventions.
In 1893, at age 21, Mr. Cohn was
experimenting in his tenement
apartment with the melting of
thorium nitrate and accidentally
spilled some of the chemical into
the flame of his Bunsen burner.
It flared up in a brilliant white
light, about 100 candlepower
brighter than anything existing.

Mr. Cohn perfected it as the
Franklin Settlement gas mantle, a small tube of textile
impregnated nitrate.

Abram Sapiro, retired attorney
who had offices in the First Na-
tional Bank Building, died Sunday
at age 79.
Mr. Sapiro, 19791 Monte Vista,
was a 1908 graduate of the Uni-
versity of Michigan. He belonged
to the Detroit, Wayne County and
Michigan State bar associations,
Detroit Lodge F&AM, and Detroit
Consistory and Moslem Temple.
Born in New York, Mr. Sapiro
lived in Detroit 70 years.
He leaves his wife, Celia; a son,
William of New York; a brother,
Jack Sherman; and two grand-
children.

Anna Kasdan, 93

Anna Kasdan, a flower and pro.
duce merchant in the Eastern Mar-
ket from 1916 to 1946, died Tues-
day at age 93.
Mrs. Kasdan, a native of Lithu-
ania, lived in the Detroit area 52
years. Her husband, Benjamin, died
in 1916, when she took over the
produce market.

Mrs. Harry (Ida) Weisenthal,

Isaac Kovarsky, 90

Isaac Kovarsky, an active mem-
ber of senior citizens clubs even
at age 90, died Tuesday.
Mr. Kovarsky, 23161 Sussex, Oak
Park, belonged to the Going Like
60 Club in Oak Park and the Jew-
ish Center Friendship Club and
Choral Group. Before his retire-
ment 23 years ago, Mr. Kovarsky
was a millwright for Allen Indus-
tries. Born in Lithuania, he lived
in the Detroit area 52 years.
Surviving him are four daugh-
ters, Mrs. Leslie (Ruth) Mann,
Mrs. Edna Forman, Mrs. Leo (Eve-
lyn) Schwartz and Mrs. Ben (Fran-
ces) Beker; eight grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
