All four agencies receive funds from the United Jewish Appeal. The fellowships were granted to the group on the basis of their academic records and their poten- tial for future leadership on campus and in their home com- munities. Initiated by director - general Charles Jordan of the JDC, the study tour project was undertaken by the sponsoring agencies as an experiment which they anticipate will eventually lead to an expanded program of overseas service oppor- tunities for young American Jews. The group will devote the sum- mer to a study of the programs of migration, resettlement and social assistance to Jewish refugees and settled populations in Europe, Israel and North Africa which the agencies operate as a team and which are given financial support by the United Jewish Appeal. INGLESIDE NURSING CENTER 9155 WOODWARD Announces continuing care facilities for the sick and aged, medical consul- tation and nursing super- vision around the clock, special therapy and spec- ial treatments. T R 2-1420 JERUSALEM — The Chief Rab- binate of Israel agreed last week to the transplantation of kidneys from deceased donors — within minutes after death — to patients in need of such transplants. This major concession by the Rabbinate — which generally has resisted dissection of bodies for religious reasons — was announc- ed by Dr. Kalman- J. Mann, direct- or-general of the Hadassah Medi- cal Organization here, as he spoke at the dedication of the sterile section of the new Hadassah Kid- ney Transplant Unit. The 'unit is headed by Prof. Marco Caine of the Hadassah-He- brew University Medical Center. The sterile division was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Leon Perahia of Buenos Aires, in memory of Mr. Perahia's parents. A kidney transplant from a de- ceased person has to be effected immediately after death occurs if it is to save the life of a person doomed by diseased kidneys. The Chief Rabbinate has agreed to the posthumous donation of a kidney to save a life, providing the dona- tion is made freely and with full understanding during the donor's lifetime. Prof. Caine, who has visited key kidney transplant centers in the United States and Europe to study latest techniques in this field, said that overwhelming susceptibility to infection is one of the big problems in treating patients who have received kid- ney transplants. To counter the danger of infec- tion, every patient has to be iso- lated in a unit as sterile as an operating theater, with intense care taken to sterilize all food, equipment, clothing and persons coming into contact with the patient, Prof. Caine said. It is be- cause of this that the elaborate and complex sterile section has been devised at very great ex- pense.
