Backed by Council

In a new tradition introduced by Governor and Mrs. Romney,
at a pre-Independence Day reception, 90 weekly newspaper edi-
tors and members of the foreign consular corns were their
guests -in their home in Bloomfield Hills on June 30. The honorary
consul of Haiti and the acting dean of the consular corps, Ralph J.
Osborne, and leaders of the Polish Legion of American Veterans
participated in the program. A flagpole was presented to the
Romneys by the Polish veterans. Among the participants in the event
were, in the photo with Governor and Mrs. Romney, Austrian Gen-
eral Consul and Mrs. Norman Birnkrant (left) and Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Slomovitz.

Morton M. Uernhol1z President
of 'Windsor Community Council

The adoption of an amendment
by the Common Council to strength-
en Detroit's Fair Neighborhood
Practices Ordinance was urged by
Dr. Samuel Krohn, president of
the Jewish Community Council.
The pending . proposal would
make it unlawful for a real estate
dealer, when acting as an agent,
"to refuse to show—property—or
to refuse to accept and forward to
the owner of the listed property
for consideration, an offer from
a person because of race, creed
or national origin." Support for
this amendment has been pledged
by a number of civic and religious
organizations, as well as by neigh-
borhood associations.
In a letter to members of the
Common Council, Dr. Krohn
praised the proposed amendment
"as a constructive and forward
step toward insuring the guaran-
tee of equal opportunity in the
choice of housing for all citizens.
Recommended for Community
Council support by the Council's
Community Relations Committee,
the amendment won endorsement
by the executive committee. The
policy of the City of Detroit, as de-
clared in the existing Fair Neigh-
borhood Practices Ordinance, sup-
ports "equal access to housing in
all neighborhoods in a peaceful
and orderly fashion." The enact-
ment of the pending amendment,
Dr. Krohn stated, will "strengthen
the effectiveness of our city's
policy commitment."
In a separate communication to
leaders of Council affiliated organi-
zations, individual and organiza-
tional letters in support of the
amendment were also urged by Dr.
Krohn.
