Theodor Herzl, founder of the
Zionist Organization, foreshadowed
assistance by the future Jewish
State in the liberation of Africa.
In his Utopian novel "Altneuland,"
published in 1902, his hero says:
"There is another problem of
the misfortune of peoples which
still awaits solution. And only a
Jew is capable of delving deep
enough into its roots. That is the
problem of the Negroes . . .
"I am not ashamed to say, even
though I may be ridiculed, that
now that I have witnessed the re-
turn of the Jews I want to assist
in the return of the Negroes . . .
That is why I am engaged on the
development of Africa. All men
must have a home. Only then will
people be more congenial to one
another; only then will people love
one another and understand one
another better."

Five years ago, "African Gene-
sis," Robert Ardrey's controver-
sial book about the animal sources
of human conduct, was published.
Its defenders and detractors found
it thrilling.
On Sept. 12, Ardrey's "The Ter-
ritorial Imperative" will be issued
by Atheneum. The Book-of-the-
Month Club has chosen it as the
September selection, and Life
magazine will publish excerpts
from the book in two issues.
"The Territorial Imperative" is,
as the author puts it, a personal
inquiry into the animal origins of
property and nations. It is a fac-
tual and stunningly written account
of his adventures in the study of
human behavior.
In "The Territorial Imperative"
the author, through some of the
most wonderful animal stories,
would prove the theory that terri-

of a specific territory—is at the

Norman O. Brown, in "Love's
Body," (Random House), embod-
ies sociological, psychiatric, hu-
mane analyses of many of man's
problems — those involving free-
dom, knowledge, judgment, resur-
rection and a score of related is-
sues.
Freudian theses are drawn upon.
The reader is admonished:
"At least in the life of the
mind, ventures should be carried
through to the end."
The author, a member of the fac-
ulty of the University of Rochester,
deals in his book with so many
aspects of life, with the spirit, that
every page is a challenge to think-
ing man.
"Everything is symbolic, every-
thing is holy," he asserts.
He goes to Scriptures, to schol-
ars of all ages. He declares on the
subject of freedom:
"Freedom is poetry, taking lib-
erties with words, breaking the
rules of normal speech, violating
common sense.'
It is a collection of varieties, of
passions and compassions, and in
all instances hurls the challenge
of history, of Freudian theories,
of biblical lore, at the readers who
are certain to be tested in many
ways by this enormous work.
