Hillel !Day School's Concert Is an Artistic
Triumph for Emma Schaver, Jan Peerce

Hillel Day School's eighth
"Founders Day" event, June 23,
was a fund-raising affair—consid-
ered fairly successful—and it re-
sulted in a noteworthy cultural
presentation. The concert, at Ford
auditorium, featuring Jan .Peerce
and Emma. Schaver, was truly an
"Emma Schaver Tribute," and for
'both artists it was a veritable
triumph.
Appearing before a near-capacity
audience—the several dozen emtpy
seats actually were sold to a
number of contributors who ap-
parently could not attend the af-
fair—Peerce and Mrs. Schaver
were especially well received in
their duets which concluded the
program. They sang together an
aria from "La Traviata," "A '
Zemerl" and ."Rozhinkes mit
IVIandlen" from the Yiddish opera
"Shula mit. "
Peerce, always a favorite with
Detroit audiences, liter ally
brought the house down with his
"Sheyeboneh." While he sang
"Sheyeboneh bet ha-Mikdash,"
many in the audience were heard
humming with him and he was
given an ovation upon the con-
clusion of this selection.
The concert commenced with a
tribute to the late Rabbi Morris
Adler, with Peerce chanting tradi-
tional hymns, including "Omar
Rabbi Eleazar," and the Bialik
poem "Haya Ish .. . " There was
a spirit of awe as the eminent
singer and the large audience ex-
pressed their tribute to the de-
parted leader.
Rabbi Jacob Segal, who later
outlined the importance of Hillel
Day School in the advancement of
Jewish educational f u n ct ions
among youth enrolled in the dedi-
cated efforts of the maximal cul-
tural tasks, explained the selec-
tions in Rabbi Adler's tribute and
added his personal expression of
grief over the rabbi's tragic death,
acclaiming the great gifts Rabbi
Adler had made to this com-
munity.
Mrs. Schaver's selections were
divided into two groupings. She
sang Handel's "Israel Out of
Egypt," with Rebecca Frohman
at the piano, to the accompani-
ment of Gordon Staples on the
violin and Italo Rabini, cellist.
Her second group of songs were
all Hebrew and Yiddish.
Similarly, Peerce's selections in
the first group were operatic and
the second all Hebrew and Yid-
dish.
The tribute to Mrs. Schaver in
appreciation of her many activi-
ties and her communal interests
were by the program participants
and by an admiring audience. She
was presented with an award by
Rabbi Segal in behalf of Abe
Kasle, new president of Hillel Day
School, and the school administra-
tion, and she was the recipient of
several floral bouquets.
Max H. Goldsmith, retiring Hillel
Day School president, and Sher-
man Shapiro, chairman of the con-
cert committee, greeted the as-
setnbly.
A feature of the concert was
the appearance of the Hillel Day
'School children's choir which led
