Center. The book is one of 5,000 volumes recently presented to the
Jewish Theolog,ical Seminary of America by the synagogue, in an
effort to help replace books lost in the disastrous fire which swept
the Seminary library last April 18. More than 70,000 volumes were
incinerated in the fire—the remaining 150,000 books, many of them
badly damaged by water, have been saved, and will be restored to
the shelves when the Seminary library reopens in temporary quar-
ters in the fall. Among the volumes in the collection presented by
the Brooklyn Jewish Center were two extremely rare editions of
the commentaries of Abravanel, one of the Bible, and one on the
Haggadah. The rabbinical Bible, one volume of which is shown
above, wag published in Amsterdam in 1725 in four volumes, and
includes an Aramanic translation of the biblical text, with commen-
tary by such scholars as Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Rabbi David Kimhi, Ger-
sonides, etc.

Moshav

The term "Moshav" comes from
a root meaning "to dwell" or "to
live" or "to settle." It is an
expression used to denote a looser
type of agricultural collective
settlement. The full expression is
"Moshav Ovdim" (a settlement of
workers). The Moshav differs from
the Kibbutz in that a member of
the Moshav lives in his own family
house and farms on his own ac-
count. It is unlike the full private
farm in that the land is owned
by the Jewish National Fund, the
holding of each member is of the
same size, no hired laborer is
employed and there is cooperative
marketing and buying of supplies.
The first Moshav was established
in 1921 by a group who. broke off
from the Kibbutz at Degania be-
cause they wanted a more private
life and farming procedures than
that of the Kibbutz. There are to-
day more Moshavim than Kib-
butzim in Israel.
