Syria Haws Three
as Enemy Spies

LONDON (JTA) — Three men
who were convicted and sentenced
to death • several years ago on
charges of spying for an "enemy
state"—presumably Israel — were
hanged by Syrian authorities last
Saturday in downtown Damascus,
it was reported here from the
Syrian capital.
Two of the men hanged were
Tawfiq Salih al-Abdellah and Far-
-;'an
Fandi al-Halabi, who were con-
.
;icted of espionage and sentenced
death on Oct. 15, 1960. They
were identified as Lebanese.
The third man executed was
Awad Raja Abu-al-Layl, who was
convicted and sentenced to death
on Dec. 1, 1962. He came from a
Syrian town near the Israeli bord-
er.
Al Thawra, the government-con-
troled newspaper, carried pictures
of the three bodies of the executed
men suspended from the gallows.

died Sunday at the age of 79, here.
He adopted the stage name from
the original Isaiah Edwin Leopold.

Three Isrealis Get Terms
for Giving Info to Egypt

HAIFA (JTA)—Three young Is-
raeli Jews, found guilty in district
court here May 8 of spying for
Egypt, were given prison sen-
tences here Sunday, ranging from
two years to five years.
The heaviest sentence was meted
out against Gideon Goldstein, 20.
He was convicted of having cross-
ed over to the Egyptian-held Gaza
Strip, where he hadoo ii offered
500 Israeli pounds (about $167)
monthly for furnishing information
about Israeli aro:y movements.
He recruited the two other
youths: Isaac Fishman. 1g, who
was given two years; and Yoel
Reiman, 17, who was sentenced to
18 months' imprisonment.
The three, according to testi-
mony during their trial, had col-
lected information for two
months about army movements
in Israel. They were caught by
members of the United Nations
Emergency Force when they at-
tempted to get into the Gaza
Strip to pass on their reports to
the Egyptian Intelligence.
Forced by !iNEF to go back
into Israel, they -eturned to their
homes and, later, Goldstein and
Fishman smuggled themselves as
stowaways ab•ard a Norwegian
ship bound from Haifa to Italy.
They were apparently apprehended
by Israeli authorities after the
Norwegians captured them aboard
that ship.

Celia Reichman widow of Rab-
bi Isaac Reichman and mother-in-
law of Rabbi Solomon Gruskin,
died Tuesday at age 79.
Mrs. Reichman, 23600 Kenosha,
Oak Park, was a member of tthe
sisterhoods of Cong. Beth. Yehudah
and Bnai Zion, Ladies of Yeshiv-
ath and Women's Sabbath League.
Born in Poland, she lived in the
Detroit area 37 years.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph
of Toronto and, Abraham of Chic-
ago• three daughters. Mrs. Solomon
( Gertrude) Gruskin, Mrs. Irving
L. (Tobie) Goldman of Chicago
and Mrs. Harry J. (Reva) Green-
stein of Philadelphia; two sisters,
Mrs. Dvorah Bodner and Mrs.
Esther Mond, both of Kew Gar-
dens, N. Y.; 17 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Rose Newman

Mrs. Rose K. Newman, an active
member of the National Council
of Jewish Women, Hadassah and
the Women's Auxiliary of the Jew-
ish Home for Aged, died Monday
at age 58.
Mrs. Newman, 6674 E. Knoll-
wood Circle, Birmingham, was
born in Newark and lived . in the
Detroit area 38 years.
She leaves her husband, Sam;
a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Alice)
LeWitter; two brothers, Harry and
Daniel Kalb of New Jersey; and
three grandchildren.

Charles Rosenzweig, a veteran
amusement park concessionaire,
died Wednesday at age 89. Mr.
Rosenzweig ran the amusements
and pool at Belle Isle from 1906 to
1928 and at Eastwood Park from
1929 to 1949, when he retired.
Mr. Rosenzweig, who lived at
the Tuller Hotel, was born in New
York and lived in Detroit 75 years.
His sole survivor, a son, Abner
C., is sitting shiva at his home at
25184 E. Rue Versailles. Services
are 12:45 p.m. today at Kaufman
Chapel.

A memorial meeting for Nach-
man Meisel, editor, Yiddish and
Hebrew writer and critic, will be
held 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
Jewish Music Center. Mr. Meisel
died recently in Israel.
Speaker will be Itche Goldberg,
educator and writer, who will eval-
uat Mr. Meisel's role in Yid-
dish and Hebrew literature. Spon-

Herbert Calfin 56

Herbert Calfin, past president
of the Used Car Dealers Associa-
tion of Detroit, died Monday at
age 56.
Mr. Calfin, 19148 Sorrento, was
a salesman at Courtesy Ford deal-
ership and prior to that was owner
of C. and M. Motor Sales for 13
years.
Born in Fort William, Ont., Mr.
Calfin lived in Detroit 50 years.
He was a member of Cong. Adas
Shalom, Mosaic Lodge F&AM,
Crescent Shrine Club, of which he
was past president, the Detroit
Consistory and Moslem Temple.
Surviving him are his wife,
Sally; a son, Marvin B.; a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Joseph (Elaine) Rice;
three brothers, -Max, Louis and
Sam; three sisters, Mrs. Harry
(Jean) Moore, Mrs. Raymond (Lo-
retta) Davis and Mrs. Abe (Betty)
Letvin; and four grandchildren.

Harvey Goodman Dies
Addressing ZOA Rally

NEW YORK (JTA) — Harvey
Goodman of New York, 54, na-
tional director of the American
Zionist Fund, the fund-raising arm
of the Zionist Organization of
America, died suddenly June 15
while addressing a meeting of the
organization.
Born in New York, Mr. Goodman
served in the United States Air
Force during World War II from
1943 to 1946. He graduated from
New York University in 1936 and
served as fund raiser in the United
Jewish Appeal from 1947 until
1962. Thereafter he was director
of fund-raising of the Mid-Atlantic
Region of the American Friends
of the Hebrew University and in
1964 he was associate director of
institute resources of the Salk In-
stitute for Biological Studies, in
which capacity he was in charge
of all fund-raising activities and
development programing of the
organization. He was also active
in civic, communal and Zionist .
affairs.
