`Khartoum' Great
Sudan Battle Film
Opening at the Music Hall on
June 22, "Khartoum," starring
Charlton Heston, Richard Johnson,
Laurence Olivier and a superb
cast, is certain to receive the com-
munity's acclaim.
Dealing with the historic theme
of General Charles Gordon's task
to protect Khartoum from the
Mandi's threats, he held out prac-
tically alone, with a few support-
ers, and was killed only two days
before British troops arrived to
try to save—too late for desired
results—the brave general.
Gordon had suppressed the slave
trade in the Sudan. He was a
hero, but he was unable to con-
vince Gladstone that aid was im-
perative.
Gladstone's role is presented to
indicate the cynical approval of the
man who could have been helpful
but was hesitant and played
politics.
The entire historical incident is
related in this splendid spectacle
with great skill. Julian Balsu.
stein's production of "Khartoum"
is a magnificent work.
