300 Popularly Used Texts Explained
in 'Dictionary of Biblical Allusions'
An unusually interesting collec-
tion of more than 300 biblical sub-
jects is utilized by Prof. Walter
B. Fulghtu-n of Central Connecticut
State College to explain texts that
are popularly referred to and in
which there is a very wide in-
terest. Both Old and New Testa-
ment texts are incorporated in "A
Dictionary of Biblical Allusions in
English," published by Holt, Rine-
heft and Winston (383 Madison,
NY 17).
"Allusion here is interpreted
broadly," Prof. Fulghum explains.
"It includes biblical word s.
phrases, people and places most
frequently mentioned in literature.
For each allusion the reader will
find pronunciation when neces-
sary, the location in the Bible,
relevant passages from the Bible,
and examples of uses of the allu-
sion in English and American
authors."
Using mainly the King James
translation, Prof. Fulghum also
resorted to the Wyclif and Vulgate
texts, to the Douay Version for
Catholics and the Bishops' and
Genevan Bibles for Shakespeare.
Starting with a long text on
Aaron, the Fulghum dictionary
concludes with Zion.
A typical text is from Psalm
23:2. Under the heading "Green
Pastures," Prof. Fulghum ex-
plained:
Zion, meaning "fortress,"
sometimes spelled Sion, was at
first the southeast stronghold
hill captured by David from the
Jebusites that became the City
of David, then the city of
Jerusalem. It is referred to
variously as "the holy hill,"
the "habitation of the Lord,"
and as Mount Zion. Bunyan, in
Pilgrim's Progress, calls the
climax of Christian's pilgrimage
"Mount Sion, the heavenly
Jerusalem (where) the in-
numerable company of Angels,
and the Spirits of Just Men are
made perfect." In Literature and
Dogma, Matthew Arnold said
that Christianity has taught the
"world's chief nations . . . to
recon and profess themselves
born in Zion, — born that is,
in the religion of Zion, the city
of righteousness." In Butler's
The Way of All Flesh, Ernest's
friend tells of seeing some of
the V e r y old members of
Theobald's church come out of a
dissenting chapel with "a look
of contentment on their faces
that made (him) feel certain
that they had been singing . . .
the songs of Sion and no new
fangled papistry."
The 23rd Psalm begin s:
"The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want. He maketh me
to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still
waters." In Coleridge's The
Wanderings of Cain, the shade
of Abel cries out to Cain in bit-
terness: "Thou eldest born of
Adam . . . cease to torment me.
I Was feeding my flocks in green
pastures by the side of quiet
rivers, and thou killedst me; and
I am in misery." In In Chancery,
Galsworthy said, ". . . from those
green pastures where Forsytes
flourish — Mayfair and Kens-
ington, St. James and Belgravia
. . , the people swarmed down
on to the roads where death
would presently pass . . ." And
in A Mencken Chrestomathy, H.
L. Mencken said a college diplo-
ma lifts one "over a definite
fence, and maketh him to lie
down ill greener pastures."
The item entitled "Zion" re-
fers to II Sam. 5:6-9; Pss. 2:6,
126:1, 137:1, 3; Amps 6:1; Rev.
14:1, and reads:
In every instance, the author's
scholarly approach is in evidence,
and this work will prove of great
value to laymen, with professional
delicious figures benefiting from it
immensely.
Prof. Fulghum heads the English
department at Central Connecticut
State College. A University of
Michigan graduate, he received
on the faculties of Northwestern,
University and previously served
on the faculties of Northewestern,
Stephens College and Illinois In-
stitute of Technology.

Shrinks Hemorrhoids
Without Surgery
Stops Itch—Relieves Pain
For the first time science has found
a new healing substance with the as-
tonishing ability to shrink hemor-
rhoids and to relieve pain — without
surgery. In case after case, while
gently relieving pain, actual reduc-
tion (shrinkage) took place. Most
amazing of all — results were so thor-
ough that sufferers made astonishing
statements like "Piles have ceased to
be a problem!" The secret is a new
healing substance (Bio-Dyne®)— dis-
covery of a world-famous research
institute. This substance is now avail-
able in suppository or ointment form
called Prepttration II®. At all drug
counters.
