Rankin WASHINGTON — Congressional action to name a U.S. Veterans Administration hospital in Missis- sippi after the late Congressman from that state, John E. Rankin, "should be dropped and some per- sonage free from a history of racial and religious bigotry should be given this honor," National Com- mander Milton A. Waldor of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. said. Waldor, in criticizing the pro- posal for the memorialization of Rankin, said "this would make a mockery of the sacrifices of veterans of Negro, Jewish, and other minority backgrounds who might be patients at the new veterans medical facility." The veterans' leader said: "Rankin's notorious tirades against American Jews and Negroes — including those serv- ing in the U.S. Army during World War II — disqualify him from selection for so high an honor by the United States government."
