Safran Advises
on Israel Visit

TEL AVIV — Hyman Safran,
president of the Detroit Jewish
Welfare Federation, warned on his
fifth trip to Israel against the
American Jewish community being,
lulled into a false by of se-
curity about Israel by the surface
signs of affluence here.
"The luxury hotels on the Tel
Aviv seashore and on Mt. Carmel
are for tourists not for Israelis
primarily, but they give a false
impression to many visitors that
this is another Miami Beach," Saf-
ran said on his current visit here.
He said that a look at conditions
under the surface will convince
any inquiring observer that Israel
faces numerous difficult problems
requiring increased aid from the
United Jewish Appeal and the Is-
rael Education Fund of UJA.
Foremost among Israel's needs,
Safran believes, is the ongoing
urgency of helping to absorb a
quarter million "unabsorbed" im
migrants, living in overcrowded
housing, lacking sufficient edu-
cational and recreational facilities
for their children in the immigrant
towns, failing themselves to earn
enough wages to give their fami-
lies a decent living.
Safran emphasized the overri-
ding social problem of integrating
half the population which comes
from North Africa and Asia Mi-
nor.

NEW YORK (JTA) Americans
going to Israel for business or
pleasure have made nearly 1,000,-
000 trips to Israel since the Jew-
ish State was reestablished, the an-
nual dinner of the American-Israel
Chamber of Commerce and Indus-
try here was told on May 12. Na-
than Strauss III, president of the
Chamber, also told the dinner
guests that United States-Israel
trade has exceeded $2,000,000 since
the Ohamber was established 13
years ago.
Gen. Ephraim Ben-Arzi, chair-
man of the board of El Al Air-
lines, told the dinner that the air-
line has purchased jets and jet
engines from American suppliers
totaling nearly $60,000,000 in val-
ue. Gen. Ben-Arzi was presented
with the Chamber's annual award
by Maxwell M. Rabb, Chamber
president, who said the airline had
made outstanding contributions
not only to United States-Israel ec-
onomic ties as a carrier of pas-
sengers and cargo but also as a
major buyer of American equip-
ment and supplies.
Gen. Ben-Arzi said that El Al
was the first among international
carriers to secure delivery posi-
tions for two U.S. supersonic air-
craft which will make it possible
to fly from the United States to
Israel in less than three hours.

Why should you go
to Phillips Men's
Store at Northland .

A: Why

shouldn't you
go to Phillips Men's
Store at Northland?

One good question deserves another.

The fact is, if you haven't been to Phillips Men's Store at North-
land you're missing something. A unique shoe store. It doesn't
even look like a shoe store — except for the fact that there are
shoes on display. (And what shoes ! Names like Florsheim and
Hush Puppies®. The best.)

It really looks like a fine men's club : Soft lighting, soft carpeting,
soft leather chairs, soft-spoken fitters who are really fitters. Not
salesmen in disguise. Come in and see for yourself.

Park at lot "G" or "H" on the south end of the center. (It's the
leapt crowded part of all.) Then walk a short way to Phillips
Men's Store. You can't miss it. It's the shoe store with a fireplace.
Why should it have a fireplace?

Why shouldn't it have a fireplace?
