Viking to Publish
Rosenfeld Stories
Viking will publish "Alpha nd
Omega", a collection of the short
stories of Isaac Rosenfeld. It will
be the first time his stories have
appeared in book form. Many of
them are now famous. Included in
this v o l u m e are "The Colony,"
which won first prize in Partisan
Review's Novelette Contest in 1945,
and "My Landlady," winner of the
New Republic's Writers Under
Thirty Contest in 1941. Another
story, "The Hand That Fed Me,"
was reprinted both in Martha Fo-
ley's "Best American Short Stor-
ies, 1945," and in "The Partisan
Reader, 1946." The title story firs,':
appeared in "New Directions
in 1948.
Isaac Rosenfeld died quite sud-
denly of a heart attack in Chicago,
his birthplace, on July 12, 1956. He
was only 38, but he had already
secured the reputation, in Alfred
Kazin's words, of "a writer of
singularly pike imagination." •
Not long before his death, Rosen-
feld had prepared a collection of
13 of his stories that had appeared
in - magazines over the preceding 15
years. "Alpha and Omega" repro-
duces the contents of that original
collection, and includes four other
stories.
