Rheinmetall Agrees to Pay
Jewish Slave Laborers; U.S..
Gives Contract to German Firm
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Rheinmetall German Arms Works,
recipient of a $74,200,000 arms
contract from the United States,
has deposited 2,500,000 marks
($625,000) in a Frankfurt bank
Tuesday to settle claims of surviv-
ors of wartime forced labor at its
plant, the Bnai Brith announced.
Dr. William A: Wexler, Bnai
Brith international president, said
the money was deposited for the
Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany. The firm
had been severly criticized for a
record of consistent refusal to con-
sider the claims of some 1,000 sur-
vivors, many of whom are now
American citizens.
It was indicated that the Rhein-
metall compromise agreement was
a factor in the U.S. Defense De-
partment's decision to give the
German firm the contract for pro-
duction of cannons. -
United States Secretary of De-
fense Robert McNamara and
West German Defense Minister
Kai-Uwe 'Von Hassel announced
agreement on the controversial
deal Tuesday in which the United
States will purchase 20MM.
cannons from Rheinmetall.
A number of the present direc-
tors of the firm were directors
during the Hitler era, and mem-
bers of the Nazi Party.
Defense Department officials
said the U.S. Army will spend
$74,200,000 for the guns, spare
parts, technical data, and royal-
ties. The gun is the Hispano-Suiza
820, and will be mounted on ar-
mored command and reconnaisance
vehicles. The agreement emerged
from a lengthy discussion of a
wide range of NATO and Ameri-
can-West German defense cooper-
ation questions. —
U.S. Army officials said that de-
spite charges by American arms
manufacturers that similar wea-
pons were available domestically,
the Army decided that no similar
weapon is available in the United
States. -
Last February, Bnai Brith pro-
tested to the State and Defense
departments against the plan to
give Rheinmetall the contract. The
Bnai Brith objection was based
on refusal by Rheinmetall to ac-
cept "any moral or legal obliga-
tion" or enter into any discussion
for "even token payments" to sur-
vivors.
The State Department then ad-
vised Bnai Brith of its interest in
an equitable solution of the dis-
pute. Rheinmetall is the fifth West
German firm to settle such claims.
Others are Krupp, I.G. Farben,
A.E.T.-Telefunken and Siemens-
Ha lske.

500,000 Russian Jews
Speaking•Yiddish, but
Schools Ignoring It
- LONDON (ZINS) — The 59
languages being taught in Soviet
schools does not include Yiddish or
Hebrew, it was, learned from well-
informed sources. The same
sources reveal that half a million
Soviet citizens gave Yiddish as
their mother tongue.
It seems that Yiddish does not
even have the luck of Kyurinish,
which, although spoken by only
6,000 persons, is taught in Soviet
schools. Last year, only three Yid-
dish books were published in So-
viet Russia, whereas in 1932 the
number was 668. In 1940, 359 Yid-
dish books were published..
It is significant that in 1964 a
total of 233 books in the German
language were published although
the Germans in Soviet Russia
number less than the Jews. It is
further reported that the section
of German writers is recognized as
an official affiliate of the Soviet
Writers Association, whereas Yid-
dish authors are not accorded the
same privelege.
