Young Man Killed
by Anti-Red Fanatic

Leo Bernard, 28-year-old former
liberal arts student at Wayne State
University, was shot and killed by
an anti-Communist fanatic in the
Detroit headquarters of the Social-
ist Workers Party Monday.
Mr. Bernard was one of three
young men who were shot by a
former cab driver. The assailant,
described as "obsessed by commu-
nism" was seized by police.
The shooting took place in
Debs Hall, 3737 Woodward,
offices of the party.
Mr. Bernard, a Cass Tech grad-
uate, was a senior majoring in biol-
ogy at Wayne until last December.
He lived at 663 Prentis.
Surviving him are his wife, Car-
lene; his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Simon Bernard; three brothers,
Helmut, Henri and Jerry.

Edward Weinberg, former De-
troiter who was a past president
of Downtown Lodge, Bnai Brith,
died May 7 in Los Angeles.
Mr. Weinberg leaves his wife,
Janet; two sans, Fred and Mark;
a daughter, Mrs. John (Marilyn)
Williams; a brother Leo and a sis-
teT, Helen Mossok, both of De-
troit; and two grandchildren.

Harry Shuman, Age 65

Harry Shuman, grocery and meat
retailer, died Tuesday at age 65.
Mr. Shuman owned Harry Shuman
Market, 11733 Livernois.
Born in Russia, he lived in De-
troit 63 years and belonged to Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and its men's club
and to Pisgah Lodge, Bnai Brith.
Surviving him are his wife, Flor-
ence; two daughters, Marjorie and
Mrs. Martin (Marsha) Murav; two
brothers, Edward and Jacob of
Miami Beach; a sister, Mrs. Sarah
Jalan; and three grandchildren.

JERUSALEM — Arieh Kubovy,
chairman of Yad Vashem, the Is-
rael center for documentation of
the Nazi holocaust, and for many
years an Israeli career diplomat,
died Monday night in Hadassah
Hospital after an long illness. He
was 69.
Born in Lithuania, he was
brought at an early age to Bel-
gium, where he received his ed-
ucation at the University of Brus-
sels and the Univeristy of Liege.
