Physiotherapy Center
to Serve Israeli Aged
NEW YORK — The first physio-
therapy center to be set up in an
old age home in Israel has been
opened by Malben in its Neve Avot
Home in Pardess Hanna, about
halfway between Tel Aviv and
Haifa, it was announced by Theo-
dore D. Feder, Joint Distribution
Committee director for Israel.
The center will serve some 1,100
residents in the home and an ad-
ditional 1,000 old people living in
JDC-Malben homes in the Shomron
area. This represents about 60
per cent of the 3,300 old people
now living in 11 JDC-Malben old
age homes throughout Israel, Feder
reported. These institutions pro-
vide half of all the institutional
beds for the aged in Israel, he
added.
Malben is the welfare program
on behalf of aged, ill and handi-
capped immigrants in Israel, main-
tained by the Joint Distribution
Committee with United Jewish
Appeal funds.
The new physiotherapy unit was
built on the site of Neve Avot's
community center which was
destroyed by fire last year. It
contains the most modern equip-
ment and is closely linked to the
home's occupational therapy unit,
thus facilitating coordinated re-
habilitation programs for the aged.
Israel Cabinet Meets
on Easing Unemployment
JERUSALEM, May 12. (JTA)-
Israeli cabinet ministers and sen-
ior officials were reported to be
holding urgent talks on means of
easing Israel's unemployment
problems. A number of ministers
have pledged government meas-
ures for that goal.
Transport Minister Moshe Car-
mel said in Haifa that the gov-
ernment intended to create more
jobs but that such relief work
must be "productive and useful."
He met with a delegation of work-
ers from the Ilin and Autocar
plants and assured them that the
government did not intend to ap-
prove setting up of an assembly
plant for foreign cars.
Commerce and Industry Minis-
ter Haim Zadok met with Mayor
Avner Garine of Ashdod, which is
suffering from serious unemploy-
ment. Raanan Weitz, the head of
the Jewish Agency settlement de-
partment, studied the possibilities
of employing 400 residents in Ne-
gev development towns.
Housing Minister Mordecai Ben-
tov promised a delegation from the
Kyriat Shrnone Labor Council that
3,000,000 pounds ($1,000,000) will
be spent on public building con-
struction there.
Christian Scholar Shows Extensive Quotation of Psalms in New Testament
Dr. Harvey H. Guthrie, profes-
sor of Old Testament studies at
Episcopal Theological Colleg e,
Cambridge, Mass. provides inter-
esting views on "the sacred songs
of ancient Israel particularly the
psalms," as being "perhaps the
familiar texts of the Old Testa-
ment."
In "Israel's Sacred Songs — A
Study of Dominant Themes," pub-
lished by Seabury Press (815 2nd,
N.Y. 17), Dr. Guthrie shows that
"extensive quotation of the psalms
in the New Testament indicates
how readily they (Israel's sacred
songs) came to the minds even of
the early Christians."
In his resort to numerous quo-
tations from the psalms, he illus-
trates his point by linking them tory, come to be related to the piety is responsible for the psalter
