Boris SmoIar's 'Between You . . and Me' HAIFA, (JTA) — By BORIS SMOLAR (Copyright, 1966, JTA, Inc.) CONVENTION SEASON: This is the season of Jewish conven- tions. A number of significant conventions are taking place this week, and were preceded by others last week. The two most important gatherings are taking place this week in _Washington. One is the 60th annual meeting of the American Jewish Committee. The other is the national conference of the Jewish com- munal workers. There were the conventions of American Jewish Con- gress, National Jewish Welfare Board, YIVO Institute of Jewish Re- search, Workmen's Circle and other organizations. The newly-elected AJCongress president, Rabbi Arthur Lelyweld, will have to embark on a program in which the fight for Negro rights should not overshadow Jewish commitments and values, if he wants to bring the organization to the height of the days when the Ameri- can Jewish Congress was led by the late Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Louis Lipsky, its founders. A little more emphasis on "Jewish" would do no harm to the American Jewish Congress. It could only give more mean- ing to its existence. * * ENVIABLE RECORD: The American Jewish Committee is coming to its 60th annual convention in Washington with a wide program which takes cognizance of two main tasks. One of these tasks which American Jewry faces today is to overcome the remaining obstacles to equality for Jews in this country and, since equality is indivisible, for all others in our society. The second task is to preserve the iden- tity of American Jews as Jews. Established 60 years ago — following the notorious pogrom in Kishinev, Czarist Russia—to protect Jews everywhere, the American Jewish Committee has established quite an enviable record for itself. From a group of selected individuals it became a mass-organization with branches and members all over the country. It watches over Jewish interests in this country and abroad. Its reputation is high in U.S. Government circles as well as in foreign lands. It was to Louis Marshall, the late president of the American Jewish Committee, that Henry Ford publicly apologized for introducing political anti-Semitism in this country by publishing the Dearborn Independent, the first anti-Semitic magazine in this country, and by disseminating the notorious forgery called "The Elders of Zion." The publication of the magazine was discontinued by Ford and the "Pro- tocols" were withdrawn and destrpyed. This is only one of the high achievements of the American Jewish Committee in its 60 years of fighting anti-Semitism. Other achievements are too numerous to be counted in this space. Three young Israeli Jews were convicted in Dis- trict Court here of spying for Egypt. They are Gideon Goldstein, 20, of Acre; Isaac Fishman, 18, and Yoel Reizmann, 16, both of Haifa. All three, now awaiting sen- tence, were arrested last February, but the case was not made public until after their conviction today. According to the charges, Gold stein infiltrated into the Egypt- held Gaza Strip, where he met Egyptian agents. The later offered him 500 Israeli pounds (about $167) per month for furnishing in- formation about Israeli army move- ments. The two others were acused of having been recruited for spying activities by members of Egypt's intelligence corps. The youths had allegedly collect- ed information about army move- ments for two months, then tried to sneak across the Gaza Strip border to pass on the data they had ac- cumulated. They turned back, how- ver, when they were spotted by members of the United Nations Emergency Force guarding the frontier. They then returned to their homes and, later, Goldstein and Fishmann smuggled themselves as stowaways onto a Norwegian ship bound for Italy. * * * Ex-Nazi Officers Given Sentences U.S. Senate to Get Bill Prohibiting Businessmen From Bowing to Arabs ben of persons with strong ties with Israel and our labor move- ment. KIA1VIESHA LAKE (JTA)—Sen- ator Walter F. Mondale, Minnesota Democrat, told 1,000 delegates to the Workmen's Circle quadrennial national convention here that he found it "offensive" to have Amer- ican businessmen filling out forms sent by the Arab boycott commit- tee to determine their business re- lationships with Israel. He announced he was going to introduce a measure which would prohibit any American businessman from filing such information. President Johnson sent a mes- sage to the convention in which he praised the Workmen's Circle for making "invaluable contributions to the social and economic progress of our society."
