THAT SUPER SUB SHOP we
told you about recently has the
only authentic submarine sandwich
in Detroit . . . There is only one
way to make this kind of sand-
wich—the right way! . . All oth-
ers are strictly imitations . . . A lot
of folks who couldn't find the
place will probably like these di-
rections better . . . one block and
a-half east of Evergreen, 1D617 W.
7 Mile Rd. . . . A submarine isn't

just some food put between two
slices of bread . . . The real sub
has the dough scooped out, and
a special sauce combined with the
meal-like sandwich . . . If you
want hot peppers, they'll put them
on for you, too . . . East coasters
know what we're talking about
when we use the word authentic
in regards to a submarine sand-
wich!

WINE IS OLD AS civilization
The ancient Babylonians were
wine lovers . . . The Greeks and
Romans were skilled vintners, and
they traded large earthenware jars
filled with aromatic wine through-
out the Mediterranean region . . .
The Bible calls wine the "blood of
the grape," and its use in the
rituals of western religions con
tinues to this day.

EVER EAT A BLUEBURGER?
. . Now this is really good . .
We used to get it at a place called
Little Denmark, and it consisted
of the conventionally shaped Amer-
ican h a m b urge r, but running
through the center of this succu-
lent little devil was a generous
amount of Danish blue cheese .. .
You could see it, smell it and, best
of all, you could taste it.

A TOURIST IN CHINA watched
as three prominent Chinese were
being buried . .. As the first cas-
ket was lowered, several Chinese
women came forward, p l a c i n g
chickens, rice, bread and wine on
the coffin . . . "What's that for?"
asked the visitor . . . "That is our
custom," answered one of the
mourners, "so that the body of the
dead man will not go hungry." . . .
The same procedure was followed
when the second casket was low-
ered . . . When the third was low-
ered only a single cup of rice was
placed on it . . . "Say," muttered
the stranger, "how come they put
such a little bit of food on that
coffin!' . . The Chinaman shrug-
ged, "That was Sing Lee. He was
on a diet."

YES, ABOUT FIVE OR SIX years
ago, there was a restaurant called
A-Z Safari Land on the east side
. . . It featured wild game dinners
—like broiled boa constrictor, Afri-
can lion steaks and alligator tails
. . . The pantry shelf was full of
goodies from the African veldt, but
even though the preparation was
excellent, we would never recom-
mend them for the timid . . . For
the adventurous, a good dinner
might start out with fresh baby
bees drawn in butter . . . For your
entree, you might choose the iguana
dinner—if you gave three days no-
tice . . . If iguana did not fit your
mood, there was the stuffed dia-
mond back rattlesnake, breast of
crow or monkey with fingers . . .
For an exotic dessert, suggested
were the chocolate covered ants.

Hias Honors Fisher;
Report Year's Plans

NEW YORK (JTA)—More than
12,000 men, women and children
from all over the world will be
helped this year by the United Hias
Service to find new homes for
themselves in the United States and
other Western Countries, Max M.
Fisher, national chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, declared at
the Essex House.
Fisher spoke at a dinner in his
honor, sponsored by United Hias
Service, which raised over $750,000
in pledges and contributions to the
UJA among more than 250 guests.
United Hias Service's work con-
sists in making possible the migra-
tion of Jews to the U.S., Canada,
Australia, France and other free
western countries.
The increased floW of immigrants
to the U.S., Fisher pointed out,
was largely due to the new liberal-
ized immigration law which has en-
abled the United Hias Service to
help many more Jews than before.
Fisher was among those who
played an important part in ob-
taining passage of the law. He re-
ceived a silver engraved carafe
from Murray Gurfein, president of
United Hias Service with an in-
scription expressing "appreciation
for his leading role in assuring the
survival of the Jewish people."
