Dr. Epstein's accompanying ex- planatory essay on the Ba'al Shem Toy follows: Two and a half centuries ago Polish Jews led an unhappy life. Lonely and scattered, they had suffered much persecution. At that time there came into the world a great .man who was to bring joy to his people. Israel, the son of Eliezer, was born in 1700. Later he became known as the Ba'al Shem Tov ("master of the good name") or Besht, an ab- breviation formed from the first letters of his title. His Parents died when he was still a little child, and the good people of his village took care of the orphan and sent him to the heder. But Israel • was different from the other children. He loved nature and would often leave his lessons to wander in the nearby woods. At 20, Israel married, and he and his wife made their home in a town at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, where the Besht wandered among the poor peasants and learned to use plants and herbs to make simple medi- cines. His thoughts were always of the Creator. He saw God everywhere and felt His presence in every- thing. He told the poor of his peo- ple that if they served God with joy, their lives would be joyous. Sadness and weeping, he said, hurt the soul of a man. The Besht traveled from town to town and the people loved him, for he shared their sorrow and brought light into dreary lives. Followers flocked to him and thus began the movement knoWn as Hassidism, for his disciples were the "Hassidism" — the pious. The Besht came to a wounded people. In the terrible Chmielnicki massacres 600,000 Jews had been murdered and over 700 commu- nities wiped out. Bewildered peo- ple hungered for a plain and simple faith which they could Auschwitz Survivor Calls `Deputy' Moral Challenge' Religious Party Members Demand Jurist Resign for Marrying Divorcee (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM—A group of Isra- eli Rabbis associated with the Na- tional Religious Party demanded Wednesday the resignation of Isr- aeli Supreme Court Justice Haim Cohn for marrying a divorced widow in New York City last March. Noting that, under Jewish reli- gious law, Justice Cohn, as a descendant of the priestly clan, is forbidden frcm marrying a divor- cee, the Rabbis called the mar- riage a "flagrant circumvention" of law governing personal status recognized by parlament and ap- plied to all Jewish citizens of Isr- ael. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 38—Friday, May 6, 1966 I "The Deputy" play ROME should not be considered as a work of history or a judgment of Pope Pius XII, but as a . moral chal- lenge for all consciences, an Ausch- witz survivor told a newspaper in- terviewer in Slovakia. Alfred Wetzler, 48, is one of the few .persons ever to escape from the Auschwitz extermination camp. He and a campmate, Ru- dolf Vrba, fled from the camp in April 1944 and returned to their native Slovakia. Their description of the Auschwitz horrors made the Jewish community realize for the first time the fate of the de- portees to Nazi-controlled Poland. The play, by Rolf Hochhuth, had its premiere recently in the national theater in Bratislava. Asked his opinion of the p lay by a correspondent of the Commun- ist Pravda of Bratislava, Wetz- ler replied: "I am glad 'The Deputy' has been produced because it presents a great moral problem. In this drama there is no question of past history, there is no question of judging Pope Pius XII, his actions or omissions, but there is the ques- tion of a moral problem valid even today. "Everyone should examine his own conscience and ask what he is ready to do to defend moral values. 'The Deputy should not be considered as a historical work or even as a work of art, but as a , moral lesson." understand and follow. He had a way of teaching which was clear and he illustrated his lessons with little stories. He said that the most important thing was to believe and trust in God. Second in importance was the joy of prayer, which was greater than learning, for prayer brought man close to God. Even a simple woods- man or farmer could reach God with a heartfelt prayer. The Besht loved Jews, all of them together and each one in- dividually. He would allow no harsh word to be uttered about anyone. All men are dear to God, he said. The Hassidic movement spread quickly through the Ukraine, Pol- and, Galicia, Lithuania — in fact, throughout Eastern Europe. The Besht died in 1760. His _disciples became the leaders of Hassidism and thousands came to them to benefit from their wisdom and learning. Hassidism was a vital Jewish movement created by a magnetic Jewish personality whose teachings still live in the world of Jewish thought.
