'The Quotable Kennedy' Incorporates
Late President's Noteworthy Sayings

Rabbi Alex J. Goldman of West
Oak Lane Jewish Community Cen-
ter, Philadelphia, did a fairly
thorough job culling from the
speeches and writings of the late
President John F. Kennedy, and
his book, "The Quotable Kennedy,"
published by Citadel Press (222
Park, S., NY3), is, as claimed, an
"omnibus" of enduring quotations.
There are 72 classifications and
nearly every
item of im-
portance is in-
corporated in
this 160-page
book. Besides,
t h e 16-page
index directs
the reader to
all of the top-
ics by titles.
There are
wit ticisins, Kennedy -
comments on democracy, politics,
courage, defense, hope, religion.
In 1958, as Senator from Massa-
chussetts, Kennedy is quoted as
having said: "I am flatly opposed
to appointment of an ambassador
to the Vatican . . . Whatever ad-
vantages it might have in Rome-
and I'• not convinced of these—
they would be more than offset by
the divisive effect at home."
As a candidate for the Presi-
dency, he said: "Are we going
to admit to the world that. a Jew
can be elected Mayor of Dublin,
a Protestant can be chosen For-
eign Minister in France, - a Mos-
lem can serve in the Israeli Par-
liament—but a Catholic cannot
be elected President of the Un-
ited States?"

There is a long excerpt from his
book "A Nation of Immigrants in
which he paid tribute to the build-
ers of this nation. _ •
A section is devoted to Israel. It
includes a portion of his speech at
the Bnai Zion banquet in New York
in 1959; another statement made
that year: "Let us make clear that
we will never turn our back on our
steadfast friends in Israel, whose
adherence to the democratic way
must be admired by all friends of
freedom"; and this statement by
his, made in Washington in 1959:
"Israel is the bright light now
shining in the Middle East. We,

and ultimately Israel's neigh-
bors, have much to learn from
this center of democratic illumi-
nation, of unprecedented econom-
ic development, of human pio•
neering and intelligence and per-
severance."

Especially illuminating are the
statements he made on religious
freedom. He called religious free-
dom and religious conviction "the
two hallmarks of American soci-
ety."
The last and longest section of
the collection, devoted to witti-
cisms, is truly delightful. It opens
with this anecdote, from Kennedy's
1958 campaign speeches:

"Several nights ago, I dreamed
that the good Lord touched me
on the shoulder and said, 'Don't
worry, you'll be the Democratic
presidential nominee in 1960.
What's more, you'll, be elected."
I told Stu Symington about my
dream. 'Funny thing,' said Stu,
"I had the : same dream myself.'
"We both told our dreams to
Lyndon Johnson, and Johnson
said, "That's funny. For the life
of me, I can't remember tapping
either of you two boys for the
job.' "

From the scores of quotations,
these examples indicate the extent
of the late President's wisdom,
Rabbi Goldman performe.d well in
collecting the significant sayings.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Contribu-
tions of more than $4,000,000 to
the $120,000,000, 10-year develop-
ment and expansion program of the
Albert Einstein College of Medi-
cine of Yeshiva University were
announced Sunday at a dinner held
by the college as the culmination
of a series of events begun in the
morning, when ground was broken
for a 10-story facility, entitled the
Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Center
for research in mental retardation
and human development, to be
erected on a site adjacent to the
Einstein College campus in The
Bronx. Mrs. Kennedy is the mother
of the late President Kennedy.
Albert Parker, vice-chairman of
the college overseers, announced
the contributions totaling more
than $4,000,000. Former New York
State Attorney-General Nathaniel
Goldstein, chairman emeritus of
the board of overseers, announced
a gift of $1,000,000 by the estate
of Louis and Ida Katz toward the
establishment of the Rose Kennedy
center. A gift of $1,000,000 was
also announced by the family of
the late Siegfried Ullmann, to sup-
plement $2,000,000, previously .
given by Mr. Ullmann for the Ull-
mann Research Center for Health
Sciences on the college campus.
Speakers at the various ceremonies
included Mrs. Rose F. Kennedy,
U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy
and New York Mayor John V.
Lindsay.

Hadassah Is Refused Foreign-Aid Bid

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The ad-
ministration has refused a request
by Hadassah for inclusion in a sec-
tion of the foreign assistance bill
that has provided massive aid to
comparable institutions in Arab
states.
Hadassah sought $1,000,000 in
Israeli pounds from counterpart
funds for Hadassah hospital, medi-
cal and nursing schools and other
services. Last year, a prior Hadas-
sah request was reject e d on
grounds that it had been filed too
late. This year no excuse was of-
fered.
The administration this year in-
creased the program, under Section
214 of the Foreign Aid Law cover-
ing grants to American-supported
hospitals and schools abroad. The
new request was for $11,200,000.
Last year, only $7,000,000 was
asked.
Nevertheless, the administra-
tion did not see fit to include
Hadassah — a fact that disturbed
leaders aware of the enormous
benefits given the American uni-
versities of Beirut and Cairo un-
der this same program. From
1959 to 1966, the American Uni-
versity of Beirut received over
$33,000,000 in the same period,
the American University of Cairo
was given $4,800,000.

NEW DELHI (ZINS) — New de-
tails have come to light concerning
, India's discourteous reception of
I Israeli President Shazar, during
the latter's stopover in Calcutta
en route to Nepal.
• Frank Marras, editor of the In-
dian Express reports that his
government has submitted a bill
to Israel for transportation costs for
two automobiles used by the presi-
dent during his brief visit.
The paper notes that three years
ago, during a similar stopover, the
late President Ben-Zvi in New
Delhi was accorded different treat-
ment. He was welcomed by the
chief of protocol • and six govern-
ment automobiles were placed at
his disposal.
It appears, the paper comments,
that India has decided to make a
public display of its "excommuni-
cation" of Israel.

French Paper Warns
ME Picture Worsening

PARIS (ZINS)--The French
newspaper Le Monde predicts that
the Arab Near East is on the brink
of increased strife and dissension
and that the course taken by forth-
coming events may well determine
the area's future.
While Egypt, Iraq, Syria and
Yemen have chosen to adopt an
anti-West policy, Saudi Arabia and
Jordan are strongly anti-Commun-
ist, "Le Monde" said.
The newspaper further reports
that Soviet Russia has resolved to
increase its military and economic
aid to the Arab "anti-imperialists"
with a view to enhancing its own
influence.
It is Le Monde's opinion that this
can only increase cold war friction
and add to the tension along
Israel's borders to be reflected in
frequent incidents which will stop
just short of a full-scale war.

New Galilean Forest

Fund Afforestation Department
has started planting two new for-.

at Ahihud, halfWay between Acre
and the new town of Karmiel, and
the other, of 100,000 trees, near
Zar'it on the Lebanese border.

Rep. Seymour Halpern, ranking
minority member of a House sub-
committee on international finance,
said: "The deletion of Hadassah
from foreign-aid benefits is inex-
cusable, and I shall of f e r an
amendment to assure the partici-
pation of this outstanding human-
itarian organization.
"It is ironic that a propaganda
center like the American Univer-
sity of Beirut has received over
$33,000,000 under this program,
while the Hadassah medical or
ganization, which treats and in.
structs Jew and Arab alike is
refused a single dollar."

Israel has accepted an invitation
to the eighth Asian youth soccer
championships that will be held
in Manila, the Philippines, from
April 30 to May 15.
