FOX (Copyright, 1966, JTA, Inc.) urday afternoon the Torah is read before the Minchah service? Basically, many authorities con- tend that the Torah should have been read on Saturday morning prior to the morning service, so that one should start the prayer service only after listening to Torah. However, the reading was shifted to a place after the early morning Shacharis service for a very practical reason. It was the desire of the rabbis that as many people as possible be present dur- ing the Torah reading. If the read- ing were to take place before the morning service, the latecomers would miss the reading, since many came from distances from where it took a while to walk. Therefore the reading was shifted to its place after the early morning service so that more people would be present at the time. At the read- ing of the Torah on Saturday after- noon, this shift was not necessary. First of all, the populace was al- ready present in the synagogue having come to listen to the rabbi or to chant Psalms. Secondly the Minchah service is a comparatively short service and there would be little gain in shifting the reading of the Torah to a time after the Min- chah service since the time differ- ence is so little.
