Jewish Protests
Greet USSR Ship

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

MONTREAL—The cultural and
religious persecutions against So-
viet Jewry were highlighted here
Wednesday night when the master
of a Soviet vessel, the SS Alek-
sandr Pushkin, was greeted by two
messages from Canadian J e w s,
protesting against Soviet anti-
Semitism and calling for easement
of that policy by the Kremlin.
The Aleksandr Pushkin arrived
in the port of Montreal Wednes-
day from Leningrad, inaugurating
the first passenger service link-
ing Canada directly to the USSR.
City and government officials
joined a reception aboard ship,
greeting the master, Capt. Aram
Oginov.
During the festivities, Capt.
Oginov was handed a letter of
Protest against mistreatment of
Soviet Jews by Rabbi Harry Stern,
spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-
El in Montreal.
At the same time he received a
telegram from Sanford Borins of
Toronto, president of the North-
east Lakes Federation- of Temple
Youth. Both Rabbi Stern and the
Federation are part of the Reform
Movement.
The messages welcomed the ship
and its captain to Canada, but
pointed out that Soviet anti-Semi-
tism hinders the development of
good relations between the USSR
and the rest of the world, includ-
ing Canada.

Basic facts, listing many items
as proof, are incorporated in "Re-
port on the John Birch Society
1966" by Benjamin R. Epstein and
Arnold Forster, published by Ran-
dom House, to show the extent
of the group's anti-Semitic trends
and the bias of its members.
The authors of this report, Ben-
jamin Epstein and Arnold Forster,
are respectively, national director
and general counsel of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai Brith.
The 112-page book, available
both in hard cover and paperback,
issued as Random Vintage Book,
quotes Robert Welch's denials that
the society is anti-Semitic and
proceeds to show the extent of
the members' prejudices.
Birch Society "experts" whose
activities include the spread of
anti-Semitism include the apos-
tate Jew and pro-Arab, Ben-
jamin Freedman; the Australian
writer, Eric Butler, and others.
The latter, national director of
the League of Rights, had written
in that group's magazine, New
Times: "What is meant by the word
gentleman does not exist among
•Jews. The genuine Jew fails in
this innate good breeding . . ."
He also wrote: "The constant re-
petition of the statement that the
Germans murdered six million
Jews is without doubt one of the
most frightening examples of the
successful use of the big lie tech-
nique . . ." And in this fashion,
the man backed by the Birch So-
ciety spreads his venom.

Seusinger and the Fourth Reich'
Exposes NATO Head's Nazi Role

One wonders what has happened
to General Adolf Ernst Heusinger,
inspector general of the West Ger-
man Bundeswehr, who was nam-
ed, April 1, 1961, as chairman of
the permanent military committee
of the North Atlantic Treaty Or-
ganization, since the expose of his
activities during the Hitler years
in "Heusinger and the Fourth
Reich" by Charles R. Allen Jr.,
published by Marzani and Munsell
(100 W. 23rd NY11).
Heusinger served as General-
Lieutenant of the Nazi Wehrmacht.
He was among the closest of Hit-
ler's military advisers and asso-
ciates.
Step by step, Allen's book tells
the Heusinger story and shows
that "Heusinger admitted at Nu-
remberg in his affidavit which was
his bid to save his own neck, that
Nazi warfare in Russia was 'a wel-
come opportunity of carrying out
the systematic extermination of
Slavism and Jewry.' " But he de-
fended himself by claiming he had
nothing to do with the atrocities.
The quotation from his affidavit
reads: "The OKH (Oberkomman-
do des Heeres—all the land forces
of Hitler's armies) was responsible
merely for the transmission of
these orders for the treatment to
be accorded Communists, Com-
missars . .. Jews and Slays . . ."
As in so many other cases,
Heusinger's defense was that he
only followed orders, that as a
soldier he adhered to directions
from superiors. But his role as
a collaborator in the cruelties
imposed upon Jews and others
by the Nazis is quite clear from
Allen's record.
Most effective in Allen's book is
the introduction by Brigadier Gen-
eral Hugh B. Hester, U.S. Army,
Ret., who charges that "the pres-
ent German policy is without ex-
aggeration the most dangerous
threat to the peace of the world;
unless this policy is radically
changed — and soon—nothing can
save us from the war now being
prepared by Heusinger of the
Fourth Reich." General Hester
challenges American officials for
giving immunity to Heusinger and
other German military men who
have been charged with guilt of
collaborating in war atrocities and
he declares:
"The record of the German Gen-

eral Staff is indistinguishable from
the Nazi party, the SS, SD, the
Gestapo and the other pillars of
the Third Reich. The State Depart-
ment cannot exculpate this mur-
derous group or stand history on
its head. Mr. Allen has exposed
this fraud once and for all. For
this he deserves the American
people's support and highest praise.
"How did the tragic U.S.-Ger-
man policy develop: who brought
it about? Clearly, Heusinger and
his co-conspirators on the General
Staff could not alone have achiev-
ed it, even with the enthusiastic
drive of Konrad Adenauer and the
heavy-handed Franz. Joseph
Strauss. This had to be an outside
job. The powerful forces of re-
action in America have been at
work. Their obvious architects
were the late John Foster Dulles
and Dean Acheson, both Secretaries
of State under Presidents who
knew lamentably little about in-
ternational politics. Dulles, of
course, was an open apologist for
Hitler's Germany until Pearl Har-
bor, and Dean Acheson is an un-
abashed admirer of the West Ger-
man state (The San Francisco
Chronicle of Aug. 4, 1963, quoted
him as having told a -group of
Yale and Smith college students:
`I believe the single most im-
portant country in Europe is Ger-
many, and we should treat her
like a 51st state. We should con-
sult her on every move we
make')."
But noted authorities have join-
ed in exposing the myth of Ger-
man friendship coming from the
Heusinger's as indicated in Allen's
expose.
Heusinger himself, on Sept.
27, 1958, is quoted as having
made this statement in an ad-
dress to German officers: "We
must remember our past . . .
Let us stick to the old prin-
ciples . . ."
The Heusinger expose also
serves as an admonition about the
new strength that is being ac-
quired by the revived Germany,
and among the warnings is one
quoting Walter Lippmann who
wrote on July 11, 1963:. "There is
already sufficient reason to ask
ourselves whether there is not .. .
long before most people expect it,
a profound change within the
Western system."

The report exposing the Birch
Society states: "In October, 1965,
a report was made at a synod of
the Australian Anglican Church by
its Vicar, the Rev. D. J. Pope, al-
leging that an anti-Semitic group
was engaged in secret infiltration
of the churches. He charged that
the group was spreading the lie
`that Jews are trying to seize con-
trol of the world,' and that it was
`r eviving old techniques used
against the Jews.' The Vicar iden-
tified the infiltrating group as the
`League of Rights'—the organiza-
tion founded and directed by Rob-
ert Welch's own Far East 'expert.' "
Numerous other anti-Semitic
acts are listed in this report in
which the authors also expose
the society's war against civil
rights.
The strength and growth of the
Birch Society is described in this
book. The authors assert that the
Birch Society "never solicited just
anyone for membership. Welch
seeks recruits with a potential for
zeal, dedication and indoctrination
to serve as a cadre for missionary
work at the grass roots."
While the society claims to be
the only anti-Communist force in
the land, the authors write, "its
leaders cannot tell a Republican
from a Red and have forfeited all
credentials and any claim what-
soever to anti-Communist expertiste
. .. It divided the nation by charg-
ing those who oppose it—and those
whom it opposes—with being Com-
munist dupes at best and Commu-
nist agents at worst . . . It wages
all-out war against remedies seek-
ing justice and equality for Ne-
groes ... It is likely to continue
its growth in the years that lie
immediately ahead—until its ac-
tions produce firm reactions on the
part of concerned Americans, con-
sciously convinced that it is a
menace to the nation and ready
to defeat it in their own commu-
nities and in the political arena."
Some of the pronouncements by
publications and leaders and mem-
bers of the Birch Society quoted
in this report on the Radical Right
include the following:
"Impeach Earl Warren."
"There are more Communists in
the United Nations Building in
New York than there are in the
Kremlin."
"Civil rights is Communist-
plotted, Communist-controlled."
"In November 1964 forty-two
million supporters of Lyndon
Johnson voted for . . . communiz-
ing our nation."
"There will be a KKK in the

USA longer than there will be an
LBJ."
"What is meant by the world
gentleman does not exist among
Jews. The genuine Jew fails in
this innate good breeding."
"The United States is an insane
asylum run by its worse patients."
"More than once the directors of
what calls itself the National Coun-
cil of Churches have been caught
in the very act of importing into
the United States and escorting
about the country identified agents
of the Soviet Secret Police."

Schlesinger Says JFK
Was Deeply Committed
to Israel's Security

IN ADDITION

President Kennedy was deeply
committeed to the security and
the development of the State of
Israel, Arthur NI. Schlesinger, his
adviser and biographer, declared
at a celebration of Israel's 18th
anniversary in Miami, sponsored
by State of Israel Bonds. He said
the late President believed that
peace in the Middle East would
come "once the Arabs recognized
the fact that Israel was there to
stay and that it was no threat
to them."
However, the eminent historian
added that Kennedy had no illu-
sions about the chances for an
early settlement between Israel
and the Arab States, but felt that
the advent of a new generation
of Israelis and Arabs would make
it possible for "the antagonisms
of the past to evaporate."
Schlesinger emphasized t h e
vital role of Israel Bonds in the
development of the State of Is-
rael.
The author of "A Thousand
Days," which records the history
of the Kennedy Administration,
said: "Israel Bonds are in-
dispensable to the economic de-
velopment of the State of Israel.
But they would not work without
the perseverance and courage of
Israel's people."
