MOVIE GUIDE ADAMS Viennese Like `10th Man ;' Jews' Fears Quieted VIENNA - "The Tenth Man," Paddy Chayefsky's Broadway hit about exorcisms, dybbuks and minyans, is playing to packed houses here despite the Jewish community's pre-opening fears. What they feared was that the play's Orthodox setting might touch off anti-Jewish feeling. But Israel's ambassador to Austria attended the premiere, and Vien- nese newspapers were generous in their praise. Eric Burger, who adapted the Chayefsky work for the German- speaking stage, said the producer has had to pull out other plays to make room for more performances of "The Tenth Man." Young peo- ple, who make up 60 per cent of the theatergoing audience in Ger- many and Austria, are attracted to the play's Jewish environment, something that is new to them. There are no Jewish actors in the Viennese cast. The play has also been a hit in Germany. Burger said that there is a great emphasis in Germany on "restitution plays" telling of what the Nazis did and of Jewish history. "The Tenth Man," how- ever, is "just a good human play that does more than anything to normalize relations between Jews and Gentiles."
