Teddy Kollek ..
Jerusalem Mayor

A District Forum will be a fol-
low-up of the March workshop for
the SOUTHEASTERN DISTRICT
OF HOSPITAL AUXILIARIES,
when they meet Tuesday at the
David Whitney House. After a noon
luncheon, panelists from the an-
nual workshop will be on hand to
answer questions.

Over ten years ago, a young, un-
known American Senator arrived at
Lod. The Senator from Massachusetts
asked to meet with David Ben-Gurion.
(who was) then the Prime Minister of
Israel. Ben-Gurion's assistants refused
the request. Only one of his staff
thought that it was worth while to in-
vest time in the Senator from Massa-
chusetts, and he arranged for him to
meet with Ben-Gurion.

Seven years later. the young Senator
was elected President of the United
States. His name was John Fitzgerald
Kennedy. The President of the United.
States did not forget the man in Jeru-
salem who had treated him courteously.
He himself invited him to an intimate
birthday celebration at the White House.
The name of the man from Jerusalem
was Teddy Kollek.

There are many stories about Teddy
Kollek's highly developed talent (sense)
in public relations with the great men
of the world.

The man who was Director General
of the Prime Minister's Office for over
10 years knew how to open every door
and heart in Washington, Paris, or
Rangoon. This talent was of help when
he decided to establish the Israel Mu-
seum, which now contains art treasures
that adorn the capital of Israel.

When Ben-Gurion resigned, Teddy
Kollek also decided to leave. When
RAFI (Reshimat Poalei Yisrael) was or-
ganized, Teddy Kollek joined the new
party (movement) and became its can-
didate for the Mayoralty of the city
Jerusalem. Teddy Kollek received 20%
of the votes (of the electors) for the
Municipality. This personal victory as-
sisted in forming a coalition.

Four years of hard work now await
the new Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy
Kollek.
