Arab Minority Sees Improved Statics
Judge Criticized for Freeing Four London Synagogue Firebugs
JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Shmuel
Toledano, adviser to the prime
minister on Arab affairs, stated
here that the economic position of
the Arabs in Israel has undergone
extraordinary improvement as
compared with the period of the
Mandate.

Toledano pointed to the fact
that thousands of Arabs cross into
Jordan each year to celebrate
their holidays but up to date not
a single one of them chose to
remain there. The reason is
simple: their economic condition in
the country is excellent.
Toledano also reported that in
the past 17 years the government
paid out 17,000,000 pounds to the
Arabs for confiscated property in
addition to granting them 40,000
dunams of land in other locations.
Thus, approximately 75 per cent
of Arab claims have been settled.
The remaining 25 per cent will be
settled in the next two years.
Meanwhile, Israeli statisticians
are concerned over the small
natural increase in the Jewish
population in contrast to the
much larger birthrate among the
Arabs residing in the country.
Figures just published disclose
that the birthrate among Jews is
22 per 1,000, while among the
Arabs the rate is 53 for each 1,000.
The evening newspaper "Ma'ariv"
reports that at the end of Decem-
ber, 1965, the number of Arabs in
Israel totaled 300,000 and the
Jewish population: 2,300,000. The
newspaper poses the question: In-
asmuch as the Arabs multiply at
a greater rate, how long will it
take them to catch up with the
Jewish population?
The general health status of the
Israel population has improved
over previous years according to a
statement by the minister of
health, I. Barzilai. The mortality
rate among new-born infants in
1965 was 22.7 for each 1,000 births
as compared with 32.4 in 1964.
Life expectantcy is 72.1 for men
and 72.9 for women.
On the other hand, there is a
considerable increase in diseases
linked to "modern living stand-
ards." Deaths from heart diseases
have recently risen by 50 per cent.
Whereas in 1964 the number of
deaths from heart diseases was
100 for each 100,000 persons, the
rate in 1965 reached 145 for each
100,000 persons.
The same period also saw an in-
crease in deaths from cancer—
from 89 to 107 and from strokes
—61 to 77.5 for each 100,000 per-
sons.

Can you guess what it costs to
maintain a Gat dryer for 5 years ?
Not much. In a survey of more than 300 families who owned their
Gas dryers an average of five years, a great majority never had a
service call. And total maintenance costs averaged out to less than
one dollar per dryer for the five-year period.*
A Gas dryer will dry more than five loads for the cost of
doing
one in an electric. And Michigan Consolidated Gas Company will
connect any new or used Gas dryer free in the areas we serve. In
fact, by owning a Gas dryer instead of an electric, you can expect
to save enough in seven years to buy a new Gas dryer. And most
Gas dryers last for more than ten years.
During Gas Dryer Dividend Days, prices are reduced. So now's
the time to see the latest Gas dryer models at your dealer or Michi-
gan Consolidated Gas Company showrooms.
