Leaders Map Counterattack on Ultra-Right, Left N.J. NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Concerned by a rising trend of extremism — right and left — in New Jersey, a group of prominent civic leaders has organized • the "New Jersey Committee to Pre- serve the Democratic Processes." It is led by leaders in labor, ed- ucation, politics, business and in- dustry and the professions, re- ligion and welfare. Its goal: to ral- ly community defenses against ex- tremist attacks. Ronald Sullivan, in a New York Times article, reported Tuesday that membership in the John Birch Society has "quadrupled in the last 12 months, with the state now ranking second only to Cali- fornia in membership growth." Although a small fraction of New Jersey's total population, the 4,000 to 5,000 Birchers make a big impact with publicity. Sullivan points out that up to _ now much of the fight against radical right organizations and the Birch Society has been led primarily by the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith and other Jewish service agencies, such as the American Jewish Committee "because radical right extremism and anti-Semitism traditionally have tended to keep each other company." The new organization hopes to act as a clearing house for intelli- gence reports on the radical right and left in New Jersey. It also would provide speakers and offer guidance to communities and or- ganizations on how to combat Birch harassment, infiltration and propaganda. All, he charged, were forced out because f Eshkol's "insistence on yes en." Peres' charges were voiced at a meeting of the Rafi Council, the top governing body of the new party. Ben-Gurion, addressing the session, rejected proposals that Rafi join the government coalition "within the next four years. We must demonstrate our aim of serv- ing the nation," he said.
