Jewish Meals

By ROSALIND S. ZUNSER

(Copyright, 1966, JTA, Inc.)

If a column on Jewish cooking is
to adhere closely to the truth, we
must report that our mothers and
grandmothers in the European
Shtetl did not do any buffet en-
tertaining. This is an amenity we
acquired in the West; not that they
did not entertain at dinners, or
even at what we would call a buf-
fet today. It was almost obligatory
to bring a guest for Shabos. In
Vilna, if you wanted to invite a
guest for Friday night supper, you
said: "kumt oif Lukshen" (come
for noodles). Noodle soup consti-
tuted an indispensable first course.
In Israel today, when you receive
an invitation to a "kumzitz" (come
and sit), it means your hostess ex-
pects you for a buffet supper.
However, though we have hors
d'ouvres from the French, pimien-
to and anchovies from the Span-
ish, strawberry Jello f r o m t h e

very own chicken liver chopped,

a minor contribution to the art
of cooking.
