"It could lead to new persecutions

The United States is assuming

a role somewhat analagous to that
of British Brigadier John Bagot

Glubb who taught the Jordanian
Arab Legion to use artillery and
armour in the name of Western
security. A few British-commanded
Arabs fought for the allied cause
in Iraq and Syria—but many more
subsequently used the same weap-

American fingers will temporarily

U. S. influence in Amman and

that the Saudi commitment against

The danger confronting Israel
is that in the shifting sands of
the unpredictable Middle East,
the regimes of Hussein and
Feisal could topple with a few
revolver shots. All the sophisti-
cated U. S. jets, radar apparatus,
and missiles would then fall into
the hands of pro-Nasser military
elements.
Nothing has been done to
achieve an American-Soviet accord
for a moratorium on arms ship-
ments to the region.
The United States has reassured
Israel that its defense will be a
matter of concern to the State De-
partment and that the Jordanian-
Saudi developments enhance Isra-
eli security. Some arms have been
sold to Israel. -
Israel has been told that the
arms shipped to Jordan and Saudi
Arabia would only be employed
against Egyptians or Russians or
Chinese. The radar net, of course,
will scan Israeli air traffic but
this is described as purely defen-
sive.
The Unified Arab Command is
now in the situation of acquiring
excellent modern arms from both
the United States and Russia. In-
deed, both sides are attempting to
balance air equipment and this
arms race is said to be to Israel's
advantage because of increased
American participation in supply-
ing Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
The State Department has voiced
concern about Nasser's purchase of
Soviet arms. Nevertheless, on an-
other floor of the same depart-
ment, plans are being drafted for
loans and aid to Egypt. Recom-
mendations are being prepared for
building an Egyptian nuclear de-
salting plant, providing electrical
generators, and vast commodity
supplies to bolster the Egyptian
economy. This will permit diver-
sion of more Egyptian funds for
Soviet weaponry. Then, will more
"balancing" American weapons be
sent to Jordan and Saudi Arabia?

vote at the parley in the Cuban
capital.
Another radical member of the
body, Sen. Volodia Teitelbaum, a
Communist, declared that his party
in this country opposes the disso-
lution of Israel. While he asserted
that Israel is a capitalist state,
comprised of "exploiters and ex-
ploited," he declared nevertheless
that Israel has the right to exist
as a state.
