Scholl-Finkelstein Troth
Announced at Party

MISS ADRIENNE SCHON

At a recent cocktail party, Mr.
and Mrs. Isadore Schon of Green-
lawn Ave. announced the engage-
ment of their daughter Adrienne
to Sidney Finkelstein, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Finkelstein of
Harden Ave., Southfield.
The prospective bridegroom re-
cently was graduated from the De-
troit Institute of Technology.
A May 22 wedding is planned.

Between May 1963, when the
first Israel Bonds fell due, and
the end of 1965, a total of $107,-
745,150 was paid out by the State
of Israel on maturing Bonds. On
May 1, 1966 the State of Israel
will make the largest single pay-
ment it ever has on any loan,
when some $30,000,000 in State of
Israel Inpendence Issue Coupon
Bonds become due for redemption.

Mitchell Dahood, S.J., a former
student of Dr. W. F. Albright, cur-
rently professor of Ugaritic lan-
guage and literature at the Ponti-
fical Biblical Institute in Rome,
one-time guest professor of Old
Testament at Boston College, has
undertaken a most difficult job:
the translation of and the writing
of a new commentary on the
Psalms. As part of the Anchor
Bible series, Doubleday has just
issued his "Psalms' I," his new
translation of Psalms 1 to 50, with
an introduction and commentative
notes.
Father Dahood makes some very
interesting claims. He states that
his translation "differs from ear-
lier efforts in that it is not the
fruit of a confrontation of the Heb-
rew text with the . ancient ver-
sions," that what he is attempting
is "a fresh translation, accom-
panied by a philological commen-
tary, that lays stress on the ras
Shamra-Ugarit texts and other epi-
graphic discoveries made along the
Phenician littoral.
What he does Introduce is a
controversy over the standard
versions as contrasted by his
own and by his assertions that:
"It is not too much to say that
all • future investigations of the
Book of Psalms must deal in-
tensively with the Ugaritic texts
. . Thorough knowledge of
Ugaritic grammar, vocabulary
and style is an absolute prere-
quisite for comparative research
on the part of biblical scholars.
Moreover, the significance of
.Ugaritic for historical grammar,
