Benjamin Appel wrote the text
and Jacob Landau did the approp-
riate drawings for "Man and
Magic," published by Pantheon
Books, combining their skills to
present "a wide-ranging, vivid
account of man's belief — in
all ages, in all parts of the world—
that he can use magic to control
events, other men, his destiny."
The reader is introduced to
sorcery, the witches' work; astrol-
ogy, chiromancy—palm reading—
and alchemy, the weird obsession
of making gold out of lead. Des-
cribing alchemy, Appel writes:
"The Scriptures are full of
stories of great Hebrew leaders
who were diviners and magicians.
Joseph was a diviner who owned
a silver goblet in which he could
see what was hidden. Moses at
Pharaoh's court changed staffs
into serpents and conjured up
swarms of frogs. The Hebrews re-
garded these deeds as miracles, a
manifestation of God's power. To
the Egyptians it was pure magic.
Although the ancient Hebrews for-
bade magic as an attempt to usurp
powers proper only to God, belief
in magic was too much a part of
the human heart to be suppressed
by either religion or law. King
Saul forbade magic, but on the
eve of battle, like so many kings
before and after his reign, he had
to know what fate awaited him.
He consulted the dread Witch of
Endor, who, as the Bible tells us,
conjured up the spirit of Samuel,
who foretold death for the king.
"Many of the chiromancers and
sorcerers of Europe were also
influenced by the Hebrew Cab
bala. The Cabbala is an inter-

pretation of the Scriptures based
on the idea that every word and
letter has an occult meaning. It
arose in the 7th Century
among the Jews. By the 15th Cen-
tury, many Christians were ab-
sorbed in the mysteries of the
Cabbala, juggling letters and form-
alas, convinced that the hidden
names of God were as potent as
magical spells. And if the author-
ities persecuted t h e Cabbalists,
nevertheless the Bible itself was
beyond all criticism. Although some
parts tell of magic and super-
human events, it is the sacred book
of Christendom and could not
be questioned. The astrologers and
chiromancers found such passages
as the one in Job: 'He sealeth up
the hand of every many; that all
men may know his work.' "
Magic is described as the uni-
versal language. Omens, star gaz-
ing and other rituals are described,
and magicians of all nations are
delineated in this interesting book.
The magic men, superstitions
and tricks resorted to in all 'ages
are described. Appel tells about
"Chaldean magicians (who) fore-
told good and evil for a fee, He-
brew magicians who sold dreams."
His book is an interesting record
of an ancient art.
