A testimonial dinner sponsored
by the National Committee for
Labor Israel (Histadrut), will be
given April 17 at the Latin Quarter
honoring August Scholle, presi-
dent of the Michigan AFL-CIO.
Proceeds will go toward the est-
ablishment of an August Scholle-
Histadrut Scholarship Fund in
Israel.
Histadrut continues to bear a
major share of responsibility for
the education of the nation's youth.
Although the government of Israel
took vigorous
steps last year
to provide free
high school edu-
cation, 59 per
cent o f Israel'
children of high-
school age must
still pay tuition.
Histadrut Schol-
arships are
awarded on the Scholle
basis of need, not on the basis of
competitive excellence.
The dinner is being arranged by
Detroit community leaders repre-
senting industry, government and
labor. Among the notables who will
attend are Mayor Cavanagh; Max
M. Fisher, general chairman of
the United Jewish Appeal; Senator
Philip A. Hart, and Pat V. Mc-
Namara; Walter P. Reuther, presi-
dent, UAW; Circuit Judges John
B. Swainson; and G. Mennen Wil-
liams, former governor of Mich-
igan.
Co-chairmen of the event are
Al Barbour, Edward L. Cush-
man, Dr. Leon Fill, Morris Lieb-
erman, Emil Mazey, Ken Mor-
ris and Joseph Ross.
