Service Groups Join to Assist
Needy Brethren on Passover

Detroit area Jews will welcome
the Passover with family gather-
ings around the seder table Mon-
day night. But many less fortunate
residents will observe the holiday
alone, in a home without a bread-
winner, in a veterans hospital per-
haps, or even in one of Michigan's
prisons.
Thanks to those in the commu-
nity who think of others, there will
be an observance of the festival
for Jews in need.
Mo'os Hitim Organization of De-
troit has supplied some 650 fami-
lies with matzo products, bottles of
Passover wine and funds for
holiday needs.
To reach all those requiring
such help, the volunteer organiz-
ation coordinates lists of names
supplied by all relief-giving agen-
cies in Detroit, including the
Wayne County Bureau of Social
Aid, Department of Public Wel-
fare, Aid to Dependent Children,
Oakland County Social Aid and
the service groups of the Co-
operative Council of the League
of Jewish Women.
The average family of six re-
ceived a check for $32, plus 30
pounds of matzo products and two
bottles of wine. For those who
have been unable to pick up the
parcels—the disabled and aged—
some 36 deliveries were made by
car and truck.
Mo'os Hitim also makes deliver-
ies of Passover products to
patients in hospitals and institu-
tions in the area.
Two _hundred patients from
Northville and Ypsilanti state hos-
pitals and Lapeer Home and Train-
ing School will be guests at a Pass-
over seder luncheon at Imperial
Kosher Caterers Thursday.
Rabbi Solomon Gruskin, chap-
lain at the three institutions, will
conduct the third annual seder
luncheon financed and hosted by
Cooperative Council.
The men, women and children
will be served traditional Passover
foods, and a brief seder will be
held.
Organizations assisting with the
event are Alpha Omega Dental
Fraternity Detroit Women, Aescu-
lapian Society Auxiliary Children

saic and the House of Shelter
Auxiliary, not members of Co-
operative Council, also assist.
Because the present Jewish
House of Shelter facility is up for
sale, the agency's auxiliary will be
unable to provide the service it
offered to patients last year when
some 30 to 40 from Wayne County
General, Northville, Ypsilanti and
Lapeer hospitals were hosted at
the House of Shelter for two weeks.
However, the auxiliary will make
a monetary contribution for one
day's Passover meal for the
patients, providing them also with
a "take-out service" after the
luncheon Thursday.
Transients, formerly put up in
the House of Shelter and now
scattered in downtown hotels, also
will be serviced by the auxiliary
for one day, and those who so
request will be brought to the
luncheon.
In addition, the auxiliary will
finance two Passover meals a day
for Jewish inmates at the Detroit
House of Correction and the
Wayne County Jail.
Rabbi Gruskin, who also serves
as chaplain for the federal prison
at Milan, said no special Passover
food will be allowed in the prison,
in accordance with a regulation
by the new Federal Prison Bureau
director. However, he will service
in any way possible the two Jewish
inmates, he said.
Several members of Yetz-
Cohen Auxiliary, Jewish War
Veterans, will join others from
Saginaw servicing the 35 patients
at Battle Creek veterans hos-
pital. Under hospital chairman
Mrs. Raye Weimer, the group
will take Passover foods to the
men for a seder luncheon, at
which Rabbi Mossky of Battle
Creek will officiate.
Rabbi Solomon P. Wohlgelernter
will conduct a Passover meal noon
Thursday for 90 Jewish inmates at
the Wayne County General Hos-
pital at Eloise. The sisterhood from
Temple Beth El will service the
project, and Mo'os Hitim will pro-
vide the matzo products.

ADL Asst. Director
and Right Wingers
Clash Over March

The assistant director of Michi-
gan's Anti-Defamation league of
Bnai Brith was involved in a fight
with members of the right-wing
organization Breakthrough at last
weekend's peace march on Campus
Martins and was charged with as-
sault and battery.
Melvin Ehrenfreund, 27, was
cited, along with Donald J. Lob-
singer, 31, chairman of Break-
through; Ralph Piper, 30, and
Richard Kohman, 30.
The peace march, called to
protest the United States involve-
ment in Vietnam, threatened to
become a most-unpeaceful riot
until 19 police tactical mobile
units and more than 100 officers
blocked off Campus Martius.
Ehrenfreund, who had attended

Breakthrough meetings in the past
as an observer, was recognized by

several members, who surrounded
him, shoved and called him names,
according to Richard Lobenthal,
Michigan ADL director. Ehren-
freund was unhurt. His trial comes
up in a few weeks.

Between two cowards, he has
the advantage who first detects
the other.—Italian proverb.
