'Spring Cleaning' of Blue and White Boxes Scheduled by JNF for April 17 Through May 3 The spring clearance of the Jew- ish National Fund blue-white box will begin April 17, according to an announcement by Mesdames Abraham Scheuer and Philip S10- movitz, co-chairmen of the JNF blue-white box committee. Continuing through May 3, vol- unteer workers who are members of Hadassah, Mizrachi Fanny Gluck and Sisters of Zion chapters, Miz- rachi of Oak Park, Northwest Child Rescue Women, Pioneer Women and Women's Auxiliary of JNF, will ring the bells of over 4,500 homes, to clear blue-white boxes. Members of youth groups also will participate. Mesdames Scheuer and Slomo- vitz pointed out that the blue box was the oldest of the traditional fund-raising means of the Keren A Bitter Herb Before Pesach By CHARLOTTE HYAMS One of Mother's friends called about a week ago and said, "Ger- trude, there's a terrific lecture I want you to hear." "I can't go," Mother said, "It's Erev Pesach and I have a million and one things to do." "But, Gertrude," she said, "what's so much to do? I made Pesach weeks ago, went down to Florida and just got back. What's so much to do? And anyway, doesn't your daughter help you?" Mother sighed. "Yes, she does." S'he was thinking of my cupboard cleaning. While her friend is sitting back, absorbing the words of some lecturer (whose wife is no doubt back home making Pe- sach), I am sitting cross-legged in the cupboard, warm soapsuds seeping into my sneakers, into my slacks leg, into the collar of my blouse, into my very con- sciousness. And into my pipe dream (this is the cupboard under the sink) come the words from beyond: "Every corner. Make sure there isn't a crumb left in any crack." Now this, to me, is the cardinal insult. Who's been cleaning this same cupboard for the past two decades or so? Elijah? Why, I know every cranny of this cup- board from the pan-cover hook I jabbed my arm with in 1954 to the pipe joint I bumped my head on in 1951, 1954 (that was a bad year), 1959 and 1965. In recent years, we've turned to the most civilized means yet de- vised by man for the lining of kitchen cupboards: self-stick. No product I have ever seen so fully carries out what self- stick lining claims to do: it sticks to itself, yourself, my- self, anyone's self who happens to be passing by the cupboard. doesn't fit. No amount of premeas- uring with a 72-inch folding ruler that always unfolds into my eye, no amount of careful cutting ever yields the exact measurement of this cell. One end of the paper is always riding up one side of the cupboard, and the other side looks like a Bar Mitzvah boy whose trousers don't fit. But I figure it won't matter; soon, there'll be a big box of matzo covering that bad spot. No one will ever know. No question about it, it's more fun that going to Florida Erev Pesach.
