Smoking Cancer
in Israeli Study

,

JERUSALEM (ZINS) — The
chances of an Israeli dying from
lung cancer are 16 times greater
among smokers of two packs of
cigarettes a day and 81 times
greater among those who smoke
more than 40 cigarettes a day as
compared with non-smokers, Prof.
I. Rackover, head of the medical
faculty of the Hebrew University,
eports.
The number of deaths from lung
: cer in Israel, writes the profes-
sor, now occupies second place af•
ter stomach cancer. During the
years 1950-57 the number of pa-
tients suffering from lung cancer
increased from 8.6 to 17.2 per 100,
000 residents. The number of pa-
tients suffering from stomach can-
cer remained unchanged — 15 per
100,000.
Of interest is the assertion by
the scientist that the number of
those suffering from lung cancer
is eight times greater among
those born in Europe (ranging
in age from 40 to 60) than among
immigrants from Yemen in spite
of the fact that the Yemenites
begin to smoke in their early
youth.
In the opinion of Dr. Rackover,
this is due to the fact that the
Yemenites do not smoke cigarettes
but nargillahs (an oriental appar-
atus for smoking tobacco, in which
the smoke is drawn through
water).
The professor describes the "bio-
graphy" of a smoker as follows:
pleasure at the age of 20, habit at
the age of 30, passion at the age of
40, damage to the blood vessels at
the age of 50 and lung cancer at
the age of 55.

Israel's Anti-Smoking
Campaign Lauded

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Amer-
ican Cancer Society lauded an anti-
smoking educational campaign
launched by the Israel Cancer As-
sociation aimed at reducing the
number of deaths among Israelis
from lung cancer and other dise-
ases. The American group praised
particularly the posters issued by
the Israeli organization which have
been prominently displayed in pub-
lic buildings and buses, and stamps
to be affixed to envelopes.
"The poster and stamp," the
American Cancer Society said,
"constitute an enterprising means
of drawing attention to the health
hazards involved in cigarette
smoking. We consider this of vital
importance to all people and we
hope the efforts of the Israel or-
ganization are successful."
