Stars Galore in New Hollywood Titles By HERBERT G. LUFT (Copyright, 1966. JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD—Jerry Lewis has completed "Three On A Couch," his 34th picture, the first one away from Paramount studios where he started 17 years ago as partner of the Martin and Lewis team in Hal Wallis' screen comedy, "My Friend Irma." Since becom- ing a solo performer, Lewis has starred in, directed, written and/or produced his own films, with none of his productions grossing less than $5,000,000, a record in the an nals of Hollywood. "Three On A Couch" marks the comic's first production for Colum- bia and, simultaneously, his change of pace from slapstick to a more sophisticated approach to comedy. The screenplay was written by vet- eran scribe Samuel Taylor, but Lewis has maintained the preroga- tive of the money-making star to be his own producer and director. In "Three On A Couch," Jerry portrays a commercial artist in love with a lady psychiatrist, Janet Leigh, who cannot marry him be- cause she has three female pa- tients in need to be cured before she settles down. One of the girls is depicted by Israeli actress Gila Golan, who portrayed a badly cur- tailed part in "Ship of Fools" but proved herself a better comedienne than dramatic performer in the madcap spy thriller. "Our Man Flint." We talked to Miss Golan at Columbia Studios and found the young lady, who was about to go on a personal appearance tour. much happier and more relaxed than she had been during, our first interview on the set of the Stanley Kramer epic. Joseph E. Levine has signed Stephen Boyd. the star of his high- ly successful "The Oscar." to head the cast of a second film to be pro- duced and directed for him by the team of Clarence Green and Rus- sell Rouse. "Caper of the Golden Bulls" is a suspense - thriller by William P. McGivern. and will be photographed later this year in Hollywood, Madrid, Rome and Paris. They follow the start of a similar inquiry by a joint -State Assembly and Senate committee into the activities of the John Birch Society. Two self-proclaimed "fuehrers" of neo-Nazi groups—George Lin- coln Rockwell of the American Nazi Party, and James H. Madole of the National Renaissance Party —were subpoenaed to appear at the hearings. The committee chairmen, Sen. Irwin Brownstein, and Assembly- man B. L. Podell, both Brooklyn Democrats, are seeking to deter- mine whether the neo-Nazi organ- izations should be required to file financial reports with the state as legitimate political parties must do. Since they announced the investi- gation into the John Birch Society earlier this month, both Sen. Brownstein and Assemblyman Po- dell have been deluged with hate mail and threatening telephone calls, many of the callers identify- ing themselves as members of neo-Nazi groups. The previous hearings have been guarded by uniformed state po- licemen and plainclothes detec- tives. Many blackshirt and brown- shirted members of neo-Nazi groups were among the specta- tors, but no hostile incidents oc- curred.
