• Israel Readies for Television Educational television required an investment of $2,000,000 for its rather limited scope. However, the relatively small amount of equip- ment purchased — from British manufacturers — is considered among the most modern and of the highest quality anywhere, giv- ing Israel a headstart at least in this field. JERUSALEM—Soon, Israel's ed- ucational television service should begin its regular transmissions to scores of schools, primarily in the Jerusalem Corridor and in Central Israel. The trial broadcasts were begun in January, and various technical adjustments to assure good quality reception are now un- -...;er way. One of those adjustments in- volves measures to prevent possible interference by TV - Cairo, broad- casting on the same Channel 8 as the Israel educational television does. By facing this problem, the Israel Broadcasting Service ac- tually already approached one of the problems that will have to be solved when television program- ming for the general public begins. The Israeli government last summer decided to establish such general television by the end of 1967, with an initial investment of 17,000,000 pounds (about $5,700,- 000). After the initial period, an- other $2,000,000 to $3,000,000 will have to be spent on expanding and improving facilities, mainly the construction of regional studios in the Negev, in the Galilee, etc. The auestion whether Israel should have television had been discussed in this country for more than 10 years. Opposition came mainly from two sources. Those like David Ben-Gurion questioned the educational and cultural influence of TV, obvi- ously under the influence of what they have seen from com- merical television in the United States and in Western Europe. The other source of objection came from government circles concerned with economic prob- lems; they were worried not only about the investment and production costs, but also of the general influence TV might have on the already strong and constant pressure toward larger consumption and higher stand- ard of living. Those in favor of television had three arguments. First, that Is- rael cannot be without TV while all the surrounding Arab coun- tries not only have "television but their programs can be received in most parts of this country. In nor- thern Israel, one can get TV-Bei- rut and TV-Damascus; in the cen- tral and southern parts of the country, there is a fairly good re- ception of the programs from Cairo and Alexandria; and, along if you take a COLLEGE PREP COURSE 1 wonderful weeks (July-August) to learn modeling, make-up, speech, hair-styling .. . swimming, water- skiing, dancing, tennis, golf and moral Fat complete details wale: LARRY PASKOW'S HARBOR ISLAND 2 I SPA Li n SLIM DOWN O MIAMI BEACH FLORIDA SP 1 S (305) 538-4621 •gok9,,i(SPEC I AL DIETS AVA I LAB LE)F0,0•0 MIAMI BEACH'S ONLY WATERFRONT HOTEL FEATURING A MILLION-DOLLAR HEALTH SPA Mit ST. It was argued that Is- rael, with its huge Arab popula- tion and with nearly half of its Jewish population coming from Oriental countries, cannot afford to abandon the field to the impact of Arab broadcasting. The second argument in favor was the impor- tant educational value of TV in the process of forging one nation out of immigrants from more than 100 countries. The third point was that Israel must have television that can be beamed at the Arab coun- tries, TV being one of the most important instruments of modern propaganda.
