Tel Aviv U. Refuses Israel Agricultural Production Grows to OK Resignation by Wise, Others TEL AVIV (JTA)--The executive board of Tel Aviv University voted here March 12 not to accept the resignation of Dr. George Wise, who had quit the presidency of the university, as well as to refuse to accept "all other recent resigna- tions." The board's decision was voted by a ballot of 6 to 2, the dissenters being Dr. Ben-Zion Katz, rector of the university, and Prof. Alfred Klopstock, the former rector. The board called on Dr. Wise, who had left for the United States, to return here as soon as possible and resume his duties as president. Tel Aviv Mayor Mordechai Namir was instructed to communicate with Dr. Wise immediately and to inform him that, as soon as he comes back, the executive board will meet with him to iron out the disputes between him and the vari- ous governing bodies of the univer- sity. Pending Dr. Wise's return, the board ruled that Aharon Doron, the university's director-general, would head the institution's ad- ministrative and financial de- partments as acting president. After the meeting, Dr. Katz, who said he will not resign, stated that he had opposed the rejection of Dr. Wise's resignation because Dr. Wise "interfered in academic mat- ters in such a way as to endanger the university's level of instruc- tion." "I don't believe," he added, "that Dr. Wise could change his habits." Dr. Wise replied to the charges by telephone from New York. "If being responsible," he said, "for bringing and retaining at the university, Prof. Yuval Ne'eman, world-famous physicist; Prof. Abba Lerner, universally recog- nized authority on economics; Prof. Joshua Jortner, a young, bright star in physical chemistry; Prof. Burton Marvin, dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas; Prof. Abel Schejter, re- search associate in space sciences of Nobel Prizewinner Prof. Libby of UCLA; and Dr. Jonathan Sha- piro, promising young sociologist, is endangering the university's level of instruction, I cheerfully plead guilty." Tel Aviv Mayor M o r de c h a i Namir has been authorized by the Tel Aviv University board of trus- tees to name a committee to medi- ate the dispute between Dr. Wise and Dr. Katz. Namir announced that the chairman of the committee will be Aryeh L. Pincus, chairman of the executive of the Jewish Agency. The Tel Aviv mayor said that half of the committee mem- bers would be from countries out- side Israel. The argument is over a proposal by the administration to split the faculty of architecture into two sections and to appoint a new dean of students. Members of the faculty staged a one-day strike Sunday in opposition to the plan, and were supported by many students. The Technion Senate Monday strongly criticized the walk-out and warned that "if the teachers repeat this step, the connection between them and T echnion may be severed." The teachers then said they were considering "collective resignations." Cardiac Researcher Marcus A.
