An organizer of Hitler youth bat-
talions, Schneider volunteered at
age 18 for combat service with the
Luftwaffe's crack dive-bombing
Stuka squadrons.
While strolling through the
streets of a Nazi-occupied Polish
town one day, he saw a group of
Jews being slaughtered by Nazi
stormtroopers. An aged rabbi died
embracing the holy scrolls in the
courtyard of his synagogue.
Schneider, now 41, was so sick-
ened by what he saw, he did every-
thing in his power to shirk duty—
pretending illness to avoid combat,
dropping bombs on uninhabited
forests or into lakes and tampering
with detonators to make sure his
bombs did not explode.

The period of penitence was over
last year. Schneider sold his prop-
erty in West Germany, resigned
from his post and bought a farm in
Israel's western Galilee.
The Haifa rabbinical authorities
found it hard to believe his story
at first, but emissaries of Israel's
Supreme Religious Council be-
came convinced of his sincerity.
Schneider grew a beard, prayed
three times daily observing all 363
precepts of Jewish religious law.
Rabbi Reuben Kahane of the
Supreme Religious Council said
the intensity of the man's faith
dispelled all doubts.
Speaking a fluent Hebrew,
Schneider has been granted an Is-
