`Trial by Jury' in Akiva School Docket Students Win Scholastic Awards

Rita Sloan Wins
Grinnell Award

The 11th annual $1,000 Grinnell
Foundation of Music piano schol-
arship was won by Rita Sloan, 22,
< of Oak Park.
She was sel-
ected at audi-
tions conducted
by the Michigan
Federation of
Music Clubs at
Michigan State
University.

The young pianist began her stu-
dies at age 7 with Julius Chajes
at the Jewish Center Music School,
where she was a scholarship stu-
dent 11 years.
She won many awards and per-
formed as soloist with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra on two occa-
sions. She also was soloist with
Wayne State Orchestra and last
summer won the piano competition
sponsored by the Center Sym-
phony Orchestra. In 1964, as win-
ner of the Pro-Mozart Scholarship,
she studied in Salzburg, Austria.
At present, Miss Sloan is study-
ing under a scholarship with Mme.
Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard
School of Music in New York.



Theological College Dean
to Interview Students

Dr. Joseph Babad, dean of stu-
dents of the Hebrew Theological
College of Chicago, will visit De-
troit Monday and Tuesday to in-
terview prospective students for
the college as well as for its pre-
paratory department, the Yeshiva
High School.
Dr. Babad may be reached 8-10
p.m. Monday at the home of Dave

and Tuesday at the home of Rabbi

Students of Akiva Hebrew Day School will present the Gilbert
and Sullivan operetta "Trial by Jury" 8 p.m. Thursday at the Labor
Zionist Institute. In the scene above, Edwin, the defendant (Fred
Ackerman), has been sued by Angelina, the plaintiff (Gloria Silver),
for breach of promise in the courtroom presided over by the judge
(Harry Tatelbaum). Students from the school's 3rd, 4th, 5th and
6th grades will participate in the presentation under the direction
of Mrs. Martin Herman, music instructor. The public is invited at
no charge.

The 20th annual Scholastic Writ-
ing Awards competition in South-
eastern Michigan produced a
number of achievement key awards
in this area, as well as honorable
mentions and commendations.
All eligible key winners have
been entered in the National
Scholastic Writing Awards Con-
test to be judged in New York
City in April.
Senior Division key winners
from Mumford included Doris Se-
ligson, Wendie Abend, Edward
Zuckerman (Mumford Musings
columnist for The Jewish News)
and Marcia Stamell. Among the
Henry Ford winners were Debo-
rah Chafetz, Janet T. Glass, Stev-
en Isenberg, Rita Leventen, Stan-
ley Feldman, Elliott Faxstein,
Harold Gach and James Morgen-
stern.
Cass key award winners included
Bruce Garber and Andrew Hoff-
man.
Other awards went to Lin Kaatz

and Frances Chessler, Berkley; Su-
san Saefkow, Becky Bethel and
Bob Kushler, Birmingham Sea-
holm; Bill "Katzman, Paul Levine,
Michael Stern, David Barcus, Cran-
brook; Judith Cohen and Fred
Miller, Royal Oak Dondero; and
James Schlesinger, North Farm-
ington.
