For the time being, he will work only on a parttime basis because he has WINNIPEG (JTA) — A sched- uled address before the German Association Club by a West Ger- man army officer and former member of the Nazi Wehrmacht, currently stationed with a NATO contingent at Camp Shilo near here, has been canceled after the Canadian Jewish Congress and other Jewish groups protested the appearance. In a statement issued here, the Canadian Jewish Congress said that the planned appearance by the officer, Lt. Col. Wilhelm Mundt. would be an "affront to the survivors of Nazism in our midst and to many other people." A similar protest was voiced by the United Jewish People's Order's Winnipeg Branch, which declared in a letter to National Defense Minister Paul Hellyer that Mundt's appearance would be "an abuse of the democratic way of life for which thousands of Canadians gave their lives in World War II against Nazi Germany and con- tempt for many families of the victims." Surfeit of 90,000 Workers JERUSALEM (ZINS)—A total of 900,000 persons are now em- ployed in Israel's industry, agri- culture and white-collar jobs. However, this number could be safely reduced by 10 per cent, namely by 90,000 persons, with- out affecting productivity, Pinhas Sapir, minister of finance, de- clared in his budgetary message. The minister added that it would be possible to employ these 90,000 persons in other produc- tive areas. Rockefeller to "defend public ed- ucation in New York States against the rising clamor of voices demand- ing more money and more services for private and parochial schools." Murray A. Gordon, chairman of the organization's New York Metro- politan Council, made the call at a luncheon attended by Gov. Rock- efeller, ranking state officials and 200 American Jewish Congress members here on their annual legislative day in Albany. He also proposed strengthening the state law against discrimina- tion by imposing fines of up to $500 of individuals and $5,000 for companies found guilty of "gross or wanton discrimination." In his a d d r es s, Gordon charged that the state legislature had become the "battleground for a massive attack against the principle of separation of church and state in New York educa- tion." He said a series of bills had been introduced "whose ef- fect if not purpose would be to . rob public education of sorely- needed funds and facilities in order to benefit private and church-related schools through- out the state." Haifa Court Orders Jew to Return Sons to Catholic Wife HAIFA (JTA) — An Amer- ican Jew, who brought his two older sons to Israel and con- verted them to Judaism without the knowledge of his Catholic wife, was ordered by a Haifa District Court Monday to return the boys to their mother. In handing down the ruling, the court explained that primary concern was the children's wel- fare and the respect for the laws of friendly countries. The court decided that the United States courts should decide what the children's best interests are in the case.
