The 23rd annual citywide com-
memoration of the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising will be presented 8:30
Apr il 3, at Adas Shalom
Synagogue.
The presentation, arranged by
the Jewish Community Council, re-
calls a tragic-heroic chapter in
Jewish history when remnants of
the Warsaw Ghetto survivors re-
volted against the German army
and Nazi oppression in April 1943,
on the first night of Passover.
In announcing the event, Irving
Pokempner, chairman of the pro-
gram planning committee, and
George M. Zeltzer, chairman of the
Council's culture commission,
noted that the Detroit program is
part of an evolving national pat-
tern of meetings held in tribute
not only to the Ghetto fighters, but
to commemorate also the 6,000,000
Jews killed by the Nazis.
The uprising in the Ghetto,
which began April 19, 1943, was
the culmination of the desperate

struggle for existence which Eu-
ropean Jewry waged in World
War II.
Isolated from the world and ex-
posed to the depravity of the Nazi
occupiers, the unequipped and un-
trained Ghetto fighters resisted
for 42 days before succumbing to
overwhelming forces. In the words
of the late John F. Kennedy, the
Ghetto experience" . . . provides
a chapter in the annals of human
heroism, an inspiration to the
peace-loving people of the world
and a warning to would-be oppres-

In the form of a dialogue, the

straight, causes the untutored to

Directing itself to recent public

"Within the sense of this state-

to Brooke a special "Medal of
